Dear Parents,
While we believe every day at Auburn North is Harmony Day for every member of the Auburn North FAMILY, we also believe that it’s important to have one particular day each year to formally celebrate Harmony Day. Last Thursday was that day this year.
During my address I quoted some words that were sent by Mr Mark Scott, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education to all NSW public schools. Mr Scott wrote the following:
“Today we celebrate Harmony Day’s 20th anniversary. Harmony Day was established to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity and to be a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home.
Harmony Day is all about togetherness and kindness and it celebrates multiculturalism and recognises that together we are so much richer for what each of us brings and contributes to our society.
Our very best chance for a happy and harmonious future comes with what our students learn together every day in our public schools.”
I think it’s fair to say that Mr Scott’s words reflect some of the very special features of Auburn North Public School.
Our 2019 Harmony Day assembly last Thursday was very special. During the assembly:
- our student choir and staff choir both sang beautifully and touched the hearts of all students, staff and parents;
- Zak and Setayesh, two of our year 2 students spoke very clearly and sincerely about what living in harmony meant to them; and
- our drumming band entertained us by performing with great energy and perfect timing.
Other aspects of the assembly that made it so special included:
- Mrs Ferishta Ghaznawi, one of our beautiful parents being presented with the 2019 Parent Harmony Day Award; and
- Nadha Mohammed and Qing Yang Liu receiving their well-deserved 2019 Student Harmony Day Awards.
I would like to thank Mrs Daujotis, Ms Whadwana, Ms McGrory, Ms Bazzi and Mrs Tukuafu for organising this memorable event.
After school on Thursday afternoon some of our teachers posted some photos and videos from and information about the assembly on social media. These tweets received many ‘Likes’ and a number of people responded with tweets congratulating our school.
One tweet was from Craig Foster, a former captain of the Australian soccer (football) team. Craig is presently the chief football analyst and sports commentator for SBS. He has also been a member of the Multicultural Council of Australia tasked with ensuring the ongoing social harmony of Australia's diverse population, and has been an Australian human rights and refugee ambassador for Amnesty International.
Craig’s tweet was:
“Well done Auburn North Public School. You will all take Australia forward with a rainbow of colours and differences which make life rich and abundant in experiences and points of view.
Embrace difference, include everyone, we are all the same, and each of you are valued.”
I’m sure all members of the Auburn North FAMILY agree with Craig’s thoughts about our wonderful school learning community. Our learning community, where we come from all around, is a community where we ALL:
- embrace and celebrate our own and each other’s cultures;
- value ourselves and value one another; and
- believe in our Theme which is Auburn North provides ‘The Best of All Worlds for 21st Century Learners’, which means we all come to Auburn North to learn one of life’s most important lessons, and that is regardless of a person’s cultural background, religion or colour we are all essentially the same. We all want to live safe, happy, peaceful and successful lives.
Our school is a model for all schools throughout the world and it is helping to take Australia FORWARD and is helping to make Australia a more cohesive and harmonious country.

Parents as Partners in Learning
On Wednesday 20th March, over 40 Year 1 parents attended the second Parents as Partners in Learning numeracy workshop for 2019.
Our second workshop was held in ANCLIC and began with a sharing session where parents reflected on and shared how playing the games from session 1 went at home. The next part of the workshop assisted parents in accessing the ANPS Library Links website to view videos of teachers and students playing games to extend their maths learning.
Most of the workshop focused on parents using technology including websites such as ‘StudyLadder’ to explore how to help their child learn and practice addition strategies. Parents explored and played a range of online addition games using computers and iPads that they can access at home with their child to encourage a love of maths.
All parents enthusiastically participated in each of the activities. There was a real sense of excitement and lots of laughter in the room. Many parents wanted to continue playing the games beyond the conclusion of the workshop.
We would like to thank everyone who came to the workshops this term, and encourage all parents to attend next term’s subtraction workshops. We look forward to seeing even more parents there!

K-2 Sports Fun Day
Our Sports Fun Day was held under sunny skies on Tuesday, 12th March 2019. A big thank you to all our parents and families for coming along on the day and supporting our students. It was great to have so many families supporting the event.
We are especially proud of our K-2 students in the way they showed wonderful sportsmanship and teamwork and displayed our School Values, in particular, friendship and fairness.
All students displayed enthusiasm and effort across the day as they jumped, threw, bounced and ran, and ran in all of the activities! The highlight of the day was seeing all students with big smiles having a fantastic day.
Here are some photos from the day for you to enjoy. You can view more photos on our school Twitter Account @AuburnNthPS
3-6 Sports Fun Day
Our 3-6 Sports Fun Day was held on Wednesday 20th March. During the event, students participated in various activities and sports. The highlight of the day was how much effort all students put into the activities, whether or not they had tried it before.
One activity that was new to majority of students and teachers was participating in the beep test. This test allows students to demonstrate their ability to run long distances and will assist teachers to select students to go to the Zone Cross Country Carnival in Week 1 of Term 2.
The students showed teamwork, sportsmanship and character throughout the day which made it an extremely enjoyable experience for all.
Here are some photos from the day for you to enjoy. You can view more photos on our school Twitter Account @AuburnNthPS

This week in mathematics, 1T and all Year 1 students have been learning all about making and describing equal groups. To be successful in meeting the learning goal in lesson 1, students used paper plates and counters to make and describe their groups. Students were required to use the correct mathematical language such as ‘groups of’ when describing their equal groups to a learning partner.
In lesson 2, students were asked to find the total of their equal groups. To be successful in this lesson, students were required to make their equal groups by putting their objects into groups, describe their groups by using the words ‘groups of’ and finally skip count by 2’s, 5’s or 10’s to find the total.
As a result of students using concrete materials as a scaffold to assist with their learning, all students engaged in challenging yet enjoyable mathematics lessons throughout the week.

5P Writing Superstars
In 5P, we have been working very hard to produce high quality writing texts this term. Students have been learning to produce persuasive and imaginative texts this term in the form of expositions and narratives.
Students have been working hard to follow the writing cycle when planning and writing their texts.
Year 5 students have been working collaboratively to peer assess and evaluate work samples. Students have demonstrated maturity in providing each other with constructive feedback to improve upon writing.
Another strategy students have used throughout this term to assess their own learning, is to critique their work against a checklist. This strategy allowed students to achieve success in future lessons, as they were able to implement a variety of strategies into their writing after reviewing.

5P Maths News
5P have been working collaboratively to consolidate their learning of new skills in mathematics. The boys and girls have learnt a variety of new skills this term including long division, measuring mass, identifying between gross and net mass and placing unit fractions on a number-line.
To learn these new skills, students have been exposed to a variety of hands-on experiences, as well as formal written algorithms.

5P Scientific Explorers
This year, boys and girls in 5P have been learning about Earth and Space within Science. Students have been following the ANPS Science Design Process to research and investigate key inquiry questions, and present their information in interesting ways.
This term, we have explored presenting information throughout modes of technology including PowerPoint and video, as well as through prepared posters and speeches.
Students are consistently demonstrating improvement in their ability to research information and present this independently in small groups.

2019 Student Leaders - Prefects
Meet the 2019 Student Leaders
We asked the 2019 Student Leaders to select or write a quote about Leadership which was important to them, and reflect on what the quote means for them as a leader this year. This is what they said:
Prefect
Fatima – 6H/I
“Great leaders don’t set out to be a leader, they set out to make a difference. It’s never about the role, it’s always about the goal”. -Lisa Haisha
This quote is special to me because it describes how important it is for a leader to have a vision or goal that they focus on throughout their leadership journey. They must not focus on themselves, but on others, in order to make a difference. I aim to focus on others and make a difference in 2019.

Prefect
Jaffar – 6V
“No matter how good you are at something, we are all equal members of the same family”. – Jaffar
In 2019 this quote will help me to always remember to think about people I may be able to help. Leaders must never boast. We are all equal members of the Auburn North family who live in harmony together.
Prefect
Aliza – 6V
“With great power comes great responsibility” - Winston Churchill
This quote inspires me because I have been given the opportunity to make a difference, work to the best of my ability and help lead our school in the right direction.

Prefect
Bahir – 6M
“Leadership is not a title to be given, but must be earned” – Bahir
This quote is important to me because it reminds me that it takes hard work to achieve great things in life. In 2019 I aim to work hard to achieve my dreams and help other people to achieve theirs.
Prefect
Zainab – 6V
“Remember the difference between a boss and a leader: a boss says ‘Go!’ and a leader says ‘Let’s Go!’” - E.M. Kelly
This quote means that a boss thinks they are superior, while a leader believes they are equal to others.
In 2019 I aim to stand side-by-side my fellow students as we make Auburn North an even better school.

Prefect
Boran – 6H/I
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader”. - John Quincy Adams
This quote is important because it explains that leaders must inspire others. In 2019 I want to help others to learn more, do more and become even better people.
