Dear Parents,
The other members of the Auburn North staff and I hope you and your families are well.
“WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE.”
Ms Lisa Chaney has been teaching at Auburn North for the past four weeks. Last week I asked Ms Chaney if she liked teaching at Auburn North. Ms Chaney’s immediate response was “WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE.”
I agree with Ms Chaney’s view of our school learning community. What’s not to like about Auburn North and being a member of our Auburn North FAMILY. Every school day our students, staff and many parents come together in our picturesque school grounds and stimulating classrooms, hall and Harmony House to teach, learn and parent together in perfect harmony.
OUR SCHOOL STARS IN THE MEDIA
We should all feel very proud that our “WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE” public school was selected to star in the media over the past two weeks. Our school was selected because of our school’s outstanding 2024 NAPLAN results.
Our school was featured:
- On the Channel 7 news.
- In an edition of the ‘Daily Telegraph’ newspaper. This article and photo are attached to this newsletter.
- In last week’s edition of the ‘Auburn Review’ newspaper. This article and photo are attached to this newsletter.
THE 2024 SYDNEY NORTHWEST MUSIC FESTIVAL
Thirty-five Auburn North students performed magnificently in last week’s ‘Sydney Northwest Music Festival’ in the Concert Hall at the Concourse, Chatswood.
The combined choir included more than 300 students from eight public schools as well as Auburn North, singing many beautiful and complicated songs.
Our students and their teachers spent the whole day rehearsing with all members of the choir before their night performance in front of a huge audience.
As you would expect, our students represented our school brilliantly. Congratulations boys and girls.
I would like to thank the four Auburn North teachers who have spent so many days and hours this year assisting the students learn the complicated songs so they could be perfect on the night, and for their organisation to ensure the day and evening ran perfectly.
The four teachers are:
- Mrs McBriarty
- Ms Wang
- Mrs Porter
- Mrs Bourizk
I would also like to thank Ms Lau, Ms Olle, Mr and Mrs Salempour, Mrs Clift and Mrs Tukuafu for attending the concert to support our students and teachers.
Please find attached to this newsletter a report about the festival that was written by Mrs McBriarty.
2024 BOOK WEEK PROGRAM – BEST-EVER
Our annual Book Week Program was held last week. This year’s theme was ‘Reading is Magic’.
All staff and students dressed up as book characters and during the day all students participated in a ‘Book Character Parade’. They also participated in scavenger hunts and competitions that were related to books.
I think this year’s program was our most successful program ever. That is because our students were excellent all day and because all teachers assisted students have great fun while also learning.
However the main reason this year’s program was our best-ever was because of the hard work and outstanding organisation by all members of the coordinating team. The members of this team were:
- Ms Saidi
- Ms Doughty
- Ms Olle
- Ms Fahy
- Mrs Wilkins
- Mrs Varley
- Ms Vuong
- Mrs Khan
- Ms DeSilva
- Mrs Minkara
- Ms Zeidan
- Mrs Mehr
- Mrs Bourizk
- Ms Hamm
- Ms Lynch
Please find attached to this newsletter a report about Book Week that was written by Ms Fahy.
SASS RECOGNITION WEEK
Once a year every NSW public school celebrates School Administration Support Staff (SASS) Recognition Week. Members of a school’s SASS team include the people who work in the school front office, our general assistants (GA) and our pedestrian crossing officer.
At Auburn North we are blessed to have the best-possible SASS team.
The members of our outstanding office team are:
- Mrs Acar
- Mrs Abouraad
- Mrs Serhan
- Mrs Helmy
- Mrs Iannitelli
- Mrs Shekoush
This is our ‘Ambassadors of First Impressions’ team. In many ways this team sets the tone of our school every day.
These ladies are so kind, caring and respectful whenever they interact with our students, staff and parents and with people when they visit Auburn North. They are such important members of our school learning community.
Each member of this team is also so efficient at completing their respective roles and every day they provide excellent support for our leaders and teachers and always with a big smile.
We are so fortunate to have Mrs Acar, Mrs Abouraad, Mrs Serhan, Mrs Helmy, Mrs Iannitelli, and Mrs Shekoush working at Auburn North.
Mr Frank and Mr Ray are our two very busy general assistants. They do a wonderful job assisting our teachers and students, they ensure our lawns are mown for students to play on and they spend a great deal of time manicuring our very attractive school gardens. Thank you, Mr Frank and Mr Ray.
Johnny is our pedestrian crossing officer on Adderley Street. He takes pride in doing his job well to ensure the continued safety of our students. Thank you, Johnny.
2024 FATHER’S DAY STALL
This week’s 2024 Father’s Day Stall was a huge success. All girls and boys were able to choose from a wide variety of gifts. The success of the stall was because of the hard work and commitment of four members of our Parents and Citizen’s (P. and C.) Association.
The organisers of the stall were:
- Ms Barazi
- Ms Apaydin
- Ms Smith
- Mrs Acar
We thank Ms Barazi, Ms Apaydin, Ms Smith and Mrs Acar.
OUR OUTSTANDING PROVESTED TEAM
The Provested Technology Team provides a range of technical assistance to more than 50 NSW public schools. We are so lucky members of their team work at Auburn North to assist our school in many ways including updating or fixing our computer hardware and software, and providing professional learning for our teachers.
Members of the team, especially Mr Ali, Ms Lima, Mr Abu, Mr Thomas, and also Mr Johnathan also work very closely with our school leaders and teachers to produce excellent short videos of some of our school’s 2024 programs and events. This is unique to Auburn North. I’m not aware of any other NSW school that is doing this exciting work.

Sydney Northwest Music Festival 2024
On Wednesday 21st August, 35 students and 4 teachers made dreams come true by performing in the Sydney Northwest Music Festival at the magnificent Concert Hall at The Concourse Chatswood. The Sydney Northwest Music Festival provides the opportunity for public schools to come together annually to showcase high-quality individual items and a combined school choir.
The Auburn North students performed in the combined school choir with 300 other students from 7 other schools in the Sydney Metropolitan area. Throughout terms 2 and 3, these students diligently rehearsed their 7 technical songs twice a week. They not only memorised the words but also learned to read the musical notes to understand the pitch and rhythm of the songs. Even though the day was long with a lengthy rehearsal, the students maintained their enthusiasm for the night.
It wasn’t until the students returned to The Concourse for the evening performance that they realised how big this event was. Many students said they had butterflies in their tummies before the performance. They proudly performed their songs, accompanied by a pianist and a school band. The students also had the opportunity to watch many high-quality individual items between their songs. They were proud to see so many parents in the audience. All the teachers were extremely proud of the students.
Between the rehearsal and performance, the students and teachers enjoyed a lovely meal together at Betty’s Burgers. The students displayed exemplary behaviour and manners throughout dinner. Many parents and teachers who were attending the performance stopped by to say hello and wish the students good luck.
Some of the teacher highlights were:
- Seeing the smiles on the students’ faces and seeing how proud their parents were of them
- The high spirits, positive energy, and exemplary manners of students all day and all night (not a single student complained of being tired, but some did fall asleep on the bus back to school)
- Hearing the students tell their friends about the experience the next day at school.
A big thank you to Mrs Bourizk, Miss Wang, Mrs Porter and Mrs McBriarty for your time supporting the students. Thank you to Mrs Clift, Mrs Tukuafu and Mr Harris for looking after all the amazing parents who came to enjoy the Sydney Northwest Music Festival performance.

The COLA was buzzing with excitement as students arrived to see their teachers dressed up as book characters.
Students had so much fun together in the hall as they paraded with their class.
Scavenger Hunts
Each grade or stage participated in a Scavenger Hunt around the school. Students needed to work together to solve clues and puzzles to move to the next station.
Book Week Displays
The ANCLIC has been transformed by collaborative art displays based on the shortlisted books.
Competitions for Students
There were four competitions for students to enter and prizes were awarded for the best entries in each grade.

KM students have been working together as a fantastic team this year. Every day they come to school with a positive attitude to learning. The students in KM began to soar in their learning last semester, and they have continued to soar in term 3.
Literacy
This term we are learning to write interesting sentences about farm animals. In each lesson we discover some information about an animal that we will see on our exciting Golden Ridge Farm excursion. Then we use that information to create interesting sentences that we can write independently. We have been able to write about what the animals eat, where animals live, and the correct name for different parts of the animals. In our sentences, we are becoming more confident writers that include capital letters at the start of sentences, good spaces between words and a full stop at the end of sentences.
Numeracy
In mathematics this term we have been developing our knowledge of the numbers 11 – 20. We have learned how to say and write each number, as well as how to represent the numbers in different ways. During numeracy lessons we have used a 10 frame and a 20 frame to learn addition and subtraction skills. We have also learned how to compare the area of closed shapes by measuring them with concrete objects, such as square counters.
Digital Technology
KM is continuing to learn digital technology skills this term. We have been supported in our learning by our fantastic peer support buddy class, 5C. We have learned to log on using our username and password, how to navigate to the Auburn North Library Links page, and how to open an app. We have even started learning to type sentences in a Word document. It has been so much fun learning with our year 5 buddies – we look forward to our lesson every week!
Science
In science we are learning about living things. We started by working out what all living things need to stay alive, and then we learned about how living things grow. Soon we will be doing an experiment where we get to grow our own plants. Of course, our excursion to the farm later in the term will help us to learn even more about some of our favourite living things – animals!

Numeracy
3L are improving our foundational maths skills daily by completing maths mentals work and continuing to practise our addition and subtraction strategies. We are also slowly, but surely, learning our times tables so that we can instantly answer multiplication and division questions. In addition, 3L are also making sure that we keep refining our problem-solving skills, so we have loved engaging in challenging maths tasks that leave us with sweaty brains! Thankfully, we can often work with a partner, so we always share ideas and learn altogether!
Literacy
Year 3 have been stretching their creative muscles this term as we began focusing on narratives. We are thinking carefully about sizzling starts that engage the reader and characters that the reader can imagine as they read. Not only are we writing, crafting and expressing our wonderfully original ideas, but we are also reading, experiencing and understanding quality picture books! The books that we read during our lessons are also giving us ideas on how to further enrich our own writing. Year 3 really are impressive!
Digital Technology
3L have started working with Superheros in our Technology lessons. We know how to connect our iPads to our robot and are also able to drive our round little robot friend around using a joystick. 3L partnered with 3H during our lesson and we all discovered that controlling a robot was much harder than it looks! Soon, 3L will be learning how to control the Sphero using coding blocks instead of a simple joystick. With or without the joystick, 3L will definitely still enjoy their Technology lessons.
