Dear Parents,
AUBURN NORTH ACHIEVES OUTSTANDING STUDENT LEARNING RESULTS
The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is the authority that is responsible for the management of the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). NAPLAN assessment tasks are completed by all students in Australia when they are in Year 3, Year 5, Year 7, and Year 9.
For several years, ACARA has released information on schools that demonstrate substantially above average gain in student reading and/or numeracy achievement, as measured by NAPLAN, as students progress from Year 3 to Year 5, from Year 5 to Year 7, and from Year 7 to Year 9.
Recently our school received a letter from ACARA as a result of our school’s outstanding NAPLAN results last year. An excerpt from this letter is reproduced below:
‘Dear Principal,
I am pleased to advise that ACARA has identified Auburn North Public School as having demonstrated substantially above average gain in reading and/or numeracy, as measured by NAPLAN.
On behalf of ACARA, I would like to extend my congratulations to you and your school community on this achievement. Improvement in student learning of this magnitude, as measured by NAPLAN, is significant and worthy of highlighting and acknowledging.’
These outstanding 2018 NAPLAN results reflect the outstanding K-6 school-based student learning results that were achieved last year. In fact, in 2018 we achieved our best-ever NAPLAN results and best-ever K-6 school-based student learning results.
This Wednesday’s ‘Daily Telegraph’ newspaper included a list of the NAPLAN ‘high achieving schools’, schools that had achieved ‘above’ or ‘substantially above’ similar schools in at least three subject areas in BOTH Year 3 and Year 5. I’m pleased to report that just like last year Auburn North was one of the schools included on the list.
I would like to congratulate the way in which our 2019 students, leaders, teachers, and parents have worked so hard and so cohesively this term and I believe if this continues, as I expect it will, then our 2019 NAPLAN results and K-6 school-based student learning results will be even stronger than those achieved last year.
I hope you feel very proud to be a member of the high performing Auburn North Public School Learning Community that is assisting our students be successful now and is preparing our students to be successful for the rest of their lives.
THREE-WAY CONFERENCES
Our three-way conferences were held this week and as always they were a great success. Students, parents and teachers met to discuss and celebrate the achievements of our students so far this year and to collaboratively set goals for our students to achieve by the end of the year.
It was wonderful to see the respectful and kind way in which parents, students and teachers communicated with one another during the conferences.
CONGRATULATIONS MISS MIRZAI
The Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards are national awards open to teachers and leaders from all Australian primary schools and high schools. Only twelve (12) teachers or school leaders are selected each year. I am delighted to inform you that from thousands of applications for the twelve 2019 awards, Miss Mirzai was selected to be one of the twelve 2019 recipients.
Miss Mirzai was selected for a number of reasons but the main reason was because of the very effective and successful way in which she collaboratively led a change process at Auburn North that significantly changed teaching and learning programs and practices in our school, and significantly improved outcomes for our teachers and students.
This year Miss Mirzai and the other 11 award recipients will have the opportunity to engage with leading education experts, develop networks of outstanding educators, and participate in master classes, all of which will assist Miss Mirzai further develop her leadership and teaching knowledge, skills and abilities.
Miss Mirzai and the other recipients will receive a Teaching Fellowship each valued at $45,000.00. From this money:
- $10,000 is for the teacher’s or leader’s professional development.
- $5,000 is for a group visit to another county that has a high quality education system to learn about its programs and practices.
- $30,000 is to develop and implement a strategic Project in their school to further improve teaching and learning outcomes in their school.
This is not only fabulous news for Miss Mirzai. This is also fabulous news for our leaders, teachers, students, and parents because Miss Mirzai will work closely with the other members of our excellent leadership team (Mrs Clift, Mrs Tukuafu, Mrs Southgate, Ms Cortejos, Mrs French) to:
- Implement some of the successful programs and practices she learns about this year by visiting other schools in Australia and overseas.
- Develop and implement an exciting Auburn North Project that will impact on all members of our learning community.

STAFF INFORMATION
We had to say “Farewell” to Mr Barker last week. Mr Barker was successful in being selected to be a classroom teacher in another school.
During his seven years at Auburn North, Mr Barker had an enormous impact on our school’s students, teachers, and parents. Not only did Mr Barker greatly assist the academic and technology learning of our K-6 students but he had a very significant impact on their social, emotional and physical development.
To assist our students gain an excellent well-rounded education at Auburn North, Mr Barker led and/or participated in a number of programs including the:
- Learn to Swim Program
- After School Sports Program
- Camp Program
- PSSA Program
- Fitness Program
During an assembly last week we took the opportunity to thank Mr Barker for what he had done for our school and to wish him all the best in his future career.
Mrs Van Vuuren started maternity leave this week and we look forward to Mrs Van Vuuren and ‘Baby Van Vuuren’ vising their Auburn North family sometime next term or in term three.
It was with a good deal of regret that we had to say “Farewell” to Mr Dave this week. Mr Dave has been our school’s excellent General Assistant (GA) for the past seven years. During this time, nothing was ever a problem for Mr Dave as he happily went about his tasks in response to requests from staff, students, parents, the Department of Education, and the constant demands of his principal.
Mr Dave also ensured that our school was well-managed during school holidays, when a good deal of work was completed around our school by tradesmen.
Mr Dave and his wife have decided to make a ‘Tree Change’ and move from the busy city life of Sydney to a quieter lifestyle in the country where he will be a part-time GA in a country high school.
We wish Mr Dave and his wife all the very best and Mr Dave has promised to return to Auburn North for the official opening of our 10 new classrooms.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
This term has been a very exciting, productive, and successful term but it’s now time to enjoy a two-week holiday. I would like to thank our Auburn North office team, our school leaders, each one of our teachers, Mrs Elias, and Mr Ray for their ongoing commitment to the education and welfare of our students. Thank you ANPS TEAM.
I would like to congratulate each of our students on their commitment to always doing their VERY BEST and wanting to achieve excellence in each of their school pursuits. I would also like to thank our delightful parents on their support of their children’s education and their support of our very special school learning community.
My staff and I wish each of our families a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to our students returning on Tuesday 30th April.
Mark Harris

3W Writing News
In 3W we have been learning about narrative writing. We have been using the writing process to help us create exciting and creative stories.
We start our week with planning, where we plan the characters, setting and outline of our story. Next we move onto composing. This is where we draft our narrative, and make sure we include many language features. We can use onomatopoeia, character speech, alliteration, adjectives and similes! After that we review and edit our drafts. Students use a checklist to assess their own learning. We also like to work collaboratively by peer editing, and giving each other constructive feedback.

3W Science News
This term, 3W have been learning about how natural processes and human actions change the Earth’s surface over time.
We have investigated the effects of weathering and erosion through many fun and collaborative experiments.
Students worked together to plan and conduct an experiment to discover the effect that water can have on rocks. We put a dried clay ball into a plastic bottle filled with water and shook it up and down for 2 minutes. The clay broke into lots of little pieces. We learnt that over time, rocks can be weathered away due to waves or rain.

This week in mathematics, KG students have started to learn about addition and subtraction.
In the first two lessons, students used a dragonfly template, counters, and dice to complete the task. Students made two groups, joined the groups together and then counted how many there were altogether.

Later in the week, students worked on their subtraction skills by using a ten frame to take away. They took objects away from the ten frame and then counted how many were left over. The boys and girls in KG have shown such persistence when learning these new skills this week!
