Dear Parents,
The other members of the Auburn North staff and I hope you and your families are well.
SPECIAL VISIT FROM 35 LEADERS from INDONESIAN MINISTRY OF PRIMARY and SECONDARY EDUCATION
A couple of weeks’ ago I was asked by the NSW Department of Education if Auburn North would like to host a visit by 35 highly qualified senior education officers from the Indonesian Ministry of Primary Education and Secondary Education.
Like the leaders of all education systems, the leaders of the Indonesian education system wanted to further develop its programs to assist its students further develop their learning, and they believed one way to achieve this was to learn from other education systems.
I was told the team of visitors wanted to learn more about explicit teaching in NSW schools and that Auburn North was selected by the NSW education department as one of only a handful of NSW primary and secondary schools to host a visit because in the area of explicit teaching our school was an “exemplar school”.
We felt very proud that OUR school had been selected and of course we agreed to host a visit by the educators from overseas because we love learning with and from other schools and systems.
We also believed because of Indonesia’s huge population, this visit would be an opportunity for our programs, practices and strategies to have a positive impact on huge numbers of schools, teachers and students in Indonesia.
Indonesia is the fourth most populated country in the world. It has a population of more than 280 million people while Australia’s population is only about 27 million.
Australia has less than 20 thousand schools while Indonesia has nearly four hundred thousand schools.
Australia probably has less than four hundred thousand teachers while Indonesia has more than five million teachers.
Australia probably has about four million students in primary and high schools. Indonesia has nearly 52 million students.
On Tuesday our visitors who are our new friends from Indonesia spent three hours in our school. During their visit they:
- Were welcomed with smiles into our school by our ‘Ambassadors of First Impressions’ (our office team).
- Were introduced to all students and staff during a short assembly in the COLA.
- Participated in a 90-minute information session in our ANCLIC that was developed and presented by the eight members of our executive team. including Mrs Clift, Mrs Southgate, Mrs Tukuafu, Ms Lynch, Mrs Mehr, Ms Zeidan, Mrs Ashfaq and Mrs Simon, who returned from maternity leave for the day.
- Enjoyed lunch and afternoon tea that were organised by our ‘Ambassadors’.
- Visited some classes to watch 45-minute literacy or numeracy lessons that were based on our school’s award-winning explicit teaching ‘Instructional Teaching Model’.
During the 90-minute presentation our visitors learned about ‘Auburn North’s 10-Year Explicit Teaching Journey’ that has significantly improved our school’s teaching and learning outcomes since 2015.
Our visitors learned about our K-6 explicit teaching and learning programs, practices and strategies, and were provided with resources to take away with them. They will also have access to videos of many of our teachers teaching using our Instructional Model.
Our new friends told us the highlight of the visit was watching the 45-minute lessons in some of our classrooms. I wanted them to see the outstanding teaching and learning in every Auburn North classroom however, they asked if they could observe lessons in groups of five.
Therefore, they could only visit seven classrooms.
When our Indonesian friends returned to ANCLIC they explained that they were amazed by:
- The quality of our teachers and their teaching.
- The behaviour of our students, how focused, engaged and motivated they were, and the excellent quality of their work.
One of our friends from Indonesia asked me, “Mark, how can we assist all our teachers be as good as Auburn North teachers and assist our students be as good as Auburn North students?”
Our new friends from Indonesia want to develop close links with our school so we can continue to support them in delivering an outstanding education for their 52 million students.
After the visitors left our school, the other members of the executive team and I met to discuss the day. We all agreed that the visitors were just like Auburn North parents. Like our Auburn North parents, our visitors were gentle, kind, polite and respectful.
Please find included with this newsletter some photos from this memorable day.
2025 NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORY TIME at AUBURN NORTH
Please find below a report about last week’s very successful National Simultaneous Story Time program at Auburn North.
This program was greatly enjoyed by students and teachers, and I would like to thank Miss Olle and Mrs Meier who wrote the report and coordinated the program.
National Simultaneous Story Time at Auburn North Public School
Despite a rainy start, the much-anticipated National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) day was filled with enthusiasm from our students, families, and teachers. NSS is held annually across Australia, uniting schools, libraries, and communities by reading the same book simultaneously, promoting a love for reading and highlighting Australian authors and illustrators.
This year's selected book, The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel, tells the story of Tinka, a cat who discovers that home is everywhere with the people who care about you most—a message that we are sure resonates deeply within our culturally diverse school community.
Aligned with ANPS's year-round reading program, NSS aims to promote a love for reading, storytelling and literacy skills. Teachers used ‘The Truck Cat’ to teach reading fluency and comprehension skills through activities such as predicting, questioning, and summarizing. Kindergarten to Year 2 students showcased their creativity by designing and accessorizing their own cats, collaborating with families to bring their ideas to life. Years 3 to 6 engaged in word searches, book summaries, and comprehension tasks, with families invited to delve deeper into the text. Some classes even explored fine motor skills by creating origami cats!
It was truly an amazing day filled with reading, learning, happy families, and smiling faces.
Some students said:
“I enjoyed the story as it showed acts of kindness. My mum and sister came and we felt that the story linked us together.” Sarah from 5O
“I loved the story about the cat finding a home!” Imraan from 2B
“I enjoyed having my family come into my classroom and write my book report with me based on The Truck Cat.” Shahad from 5O

KO Class Report
Term 2 has been a fantastic one for KO thus far. The students have demonstrated a strong commitment to their learning, consistently displaying our school values with pride as they continue to grow and achieve.
In literacy, students have made excellent progress in learning their sounds and are now confidently writing four- and five-letter words. They have also begun writing simple sentences about characters from their decodable readers, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence as young writers continue to flourish.
In mathematics, KO has been focused on recognising and writing numbers to 10, with many students already identifying and writing numbers up to 20. Their number knowledge is expanding rapidly, and they have shown great enthusiasm for learning how to accurately add and subtract using groups of objects with concrete materials such as counters, dice, blocks and penguins on ice!
This term got off to a very energetic start with our Cross-Country event. Our Kindergarten students embarked on their first journey down to the oval, where they showed great determination, resilience, and team spirit whilst participating in their running races.
The fun only continued with our next fun event ‘Crazy Hair and Sock Day’. Students had an exciting time taking part in the day and it was wonderful to see their creativity shine through with unique hairstyles and lots of colourful, quirky socks. The classroom was full of smiles and laughter as the children enjoyed the special day.
KO has had an outstanding start to their primary school journey. We look forward to the rest of the year and the many exciting learning opportunities to come. Well done, KO – we are incredibly proud of you!
4D’s Term Update – Thriving in 2025!
4D has had a fantastic and productive start to Term 2, diving into so many exciting learning opportunities!
Literacy
In Literacy, we’ve been exploring information reports, learning how to identify the main idea in predictable texts and building strong vocabulary by using morphological knowledge. We’ve especially enjoyed researching and writing information reports about fascinating animals such as sharks, lions and owls.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, we’ve been budding mathematicians, confidently using algorithms to solve addition and subtraction problems with 3- and 4-digit numbers. We’ve also tackled money calculations, including finding the correct change in real-life problem-solving tasks.
Other Key Learning Areas
As keen scientists, we’ve been investigating how the Earth revolves around the Sun, and in History, we’ve taken a journey back in time to recognise the diversity and longevity of Australia’s First Peoples, while learning to appreciate their remarkable contributions and cultures.
School Community
4D are proud members of our school community, asking thoughtful questions like, “How can I contribute to promoting healthy, safe, and active communities?”
In true 4D spirit, we’ve been immersing ourselves in school life by actively participating in Cross Country, celebrating Crazy Hair and Sock Day, and now, for the first time, many of us are proudly representing our school in the PSSA Winter Sports competition.
Whether we’re achieving goals in the classroom or showing team spirit on and off the field, we continue to celebrate our everyday wins and support each other to grow, learn and thrive in 2025.
