Principal
1D had a wonderful time learning throughout Term 1 and enthusiastically returned to school for Term 2 after a well-earned break.
Literacy
In Term 1, writing lessons focused on writing ‘Information Texts’ and 1D particularly enjoyed researching the Australian animals that feature as our mascots in Literacy Groups, such as kangaroos and koalas. Students were asked to write interesting sentences that included adjectives and conjunctions as they detailed their animal’s appearance, diet and habitat.
In Term 2, our writing goals remain the same until we change our focus to narratives in Week 7 and dive into the magical world of storytelling! Students will have the opportunity to build their imaginations, stretch their vocabularies and turn their creative ideas into structured, meaningful stories.
Numeracy
Maths is always fun and 1D has shown great commitment to ensuring our learning goal is achieved in each lesson. We particularly enjoyed learning about a range of addition strategies including number bonds of 10 and doubles. We used different materials including ten frames, unifix blocks, double sided counters and dice to assist us in becoming flexible when problem solving and develop our confidence as mathematicians.
ICT
Students in 1D continue to be excited by our ICT program as we continue to make progress with the skills of logging in, opening a Word document and familiarising ourselves with the keyboard to compose texts. Navigating such software is helping 1D develop essential 21st century skills and prepare them for their future careers in a digital world.
Sport
Students in 1D are also very enthusiastic about the sports program for this term as we learn about the importance of inclusion and fair play through a variety of group-based games and activities.
With such an exciting start to the year, 1D continues to thrive, as we make 2025 the year of our lives.
Literacy
During literacy, 3H students have become dinosaur experts! During reading and writing sessions, we have explored fascinating facts about different species of dinosaurs, their characteristics, and how they lived. Students worked in their literacy groups to read informative texts and used what they learnt to create their own dinosaur-themed information reports.
Mathematics
In maths, our focus has been on becoming more efficient problem solvers by using new mental math strategies. Students practised methods such as partitioning, bridging to ten, and using number lines to solve addition and subtraction problems. It was fantastic to see the growth in confidence and the speed at which students were tackling tricky number challenges.
PDH
During PDH lessons, 3H has learnt about the importance of building positive relationships. Through group discussions, team activities and reflection, students developed the skills needed to be kind, respectful, and supportive friends. The class has thoroughly enjoyed spending time together, learning collaboratively, and forming new friendships. We are proud of the teamwork and care students show each other.
Term 2 has been filled with learning, laughter, and growing together as a team.
2B has had a fantastic start to the year. Our classroom has been buzzing with energy, creativity, and a love of learning. One of our most memorable moments from Term 2 was Crazy Hair and Sock Day. The students and teachers came to school with the craziest hairstyles and the most colourful socks you could imagine.
It was a day full of laughter, fun, and fantastic fashion statements. We loved seeing everyone’s creativity on display.
Literacy
In literacy, we have been working hard to become experts at writing information reports. We’ve used our research skills to learn fascinating facts about countries including India, China, Japan, France and Italy. Students have enjoyed discovering each country's unique culture, landmarks, and traditional foods and then organising their ideas into well-structured reports using headings and subheadings.
Now that we’ve built strong research and writing skills, our next adventure in Literacy will be narrative writing. We’re very excited to begin exploring characters, settings, and story structure as we create our own imaginative stories.
In addition to our phonics lessons, each week we take part in literacy rotations which support reading, writing, and phonics development. These small-group activities allow students to practise targeted skills in fun and engaging ways. This term, we’ve had a strong focus on improving our encoding skills—learning how to break words into sounds and spell them accurately. The students have made great progress and are becoming more confident and capable writers.
Mathematics
Maths in 2B is always a fun and an engaging experience. This term 2B has taken on the exciting challenge of learning the jump strategy for addition and subtraction. This is a very important part of Year 2 maths, as it helps build a strong foundation for mental maths in the future.
The students have shown great character and a positive attitude as they’ve worked through this new strategy. It’s been fantastic to see their confidence grow as they practise using number lines to break apart numbers and solve problems efficiently.
We’re so proud of the way 2B has embraced this challenge.
Each week, we take part in maths groups, which give us the chance to practise key skills through hands-on games and exciting challenges that really make our brains sweat. It’s a highlight for the students, who love working collaboratively and stretching their thinking in fun and engaging ways.
Other Key Learning Areas
In Science, 2B has been learning all about how humans use plants and animals in their daily lives. We explored traditional Aboriginal uses of eucalyptus leaves for medicine and discovered how witchetty grubs were an important food source.
Students were fascinated to learn about where our food comes from and how natural resources like cotton are transformed from a plant into fabric.
It’s been a hands-on and eye-opening unit that has helped us appreciate the many ways we rely on the natural world.
In History, 2B has been investigating how our local area, Auburn has changed over time. We’ve examined old photographs and listened to fascinating stories from Mrs Mehr and Mrs Luk, who were once students at Auburn North Public School themselves.
It was exciting to learn how much the school has grown and changed. Soon, we’ll be learning about Harmony House, part of the Schools as Community Centres Project at our school. Year 2 students will explore its history and even take a visit to see how it has evolved and continues to support our community today.
I am incredibly proud of 2B’s hard work, curiosity, and growth so far this year. I can’t wait to see what else we’ll discover together as we move through the term.
Literacy
6/5N have had an incredibly busy and exciting start to Term 2.
In literacy, Year 5 and 6 have been learning to write persuasive texts with Year 5 having a debating focus and Year 6 having an informative focus.
In numeracy, Year 5 have been learning to multiply and divide using the area model while Year 6 have been learning to multiply and divide decimal numbers.
We have also participated in very exciting whole school events like our K-6 Cross Country and our very special visit from our new Indonesian friends.
In literacy, Year 5 have been learning to write persuasive texts so that we can use them in our debates with our classmates. Debating is a fun and engaging way to convince the audience of our point of view, and we cannot wait to begin our debates and see who the winners are of each debate.
In Year 6, we have been learning to write a persuasive text based on the text, ‘One Small Island’ by Alison Lester and Carol Tulloch, and why the government must protect Macquarie Island and places like it. We have learnt that Macquarie Island is so important because of its biodiversity, scientific research and its historical and cultural significance.
In numeracy, Year 5 have been learning to multiply and divide using the area model. We have learnt that partitioning is a very important skill to master when using the area model, and we have been prasticing our multiplication facts to help us complete our questions more efficiently.
In Year 6, we have been learning to multiply and divide decimal numbers. A fun fact is that multiplying and dividing decimal numbers is just like multiplying and dividing whole numbers, but we just need to remember to move the decimal point to the correct place.
Finally, we have absolutely loved our whole school events that we have had this term. The K-6 Cross Country carnival was such a fun day where we got to run 5-7 laps around the oval… a total of 2-3km! Our legs and voices were extremely sore after all our running and chanting for our housemates.
The other very exciting event that happened was that our class got to participate in one of the lesson observations for our new Indonesian friends, who visited our classroom to learn about explicit teaching at Auburn North. Even though there were many new faces in the room, their big smiles and friendly nature made us all feel so comfortable, and we loved showing them how hardworking and beautifully behaved we all are.
We can’t wait for the rest of this term. We know that we have some very exciting things coming up like the athletics carnival and our end of semester reports.
Year 1 'Parents as Partners in Learning Workshop'
The focus of the session was to share how reading is taught in the Year 1 classrooms and provide families with practical strategies they can use at home to support their child’s reading development.
We explored common decoding errors and shared examples of effective feedback parents can use while reading with their children at home. For example, “Say the sounds and blend them together.”
Together we explored the different types of comprehension questions, including literal and inferential comprehension. Families received a step-by-step guide they can use at home to assist their child develop the skills to answer literal comprehension questions.
It was wonderful to see families immediately applying these strategies while reading alongside their children during the workshop.
To end our workshop, families and students teamed up to play a fun and interactive game of Kahoot! Students read a decodable text and worked with their family to answer a variety of comprehension questions. This was the highlight for many of our students and families.
We were delighted to have so many families attend our workshop and we are looking forward to hosting another Year 1 workshop in Term 3 focusing on numeracy.

Year 1's Wild Adventure to Sydney Zoo!
This term, Year 1 students have been learning all about Australian animals. They have been writing incredible information texts to share everything they've learned about each animal’s appearance, diet, and habitat.
On Tuesday 3rd June, all the students in Year 1 went on an excursion to Sydney Zoo to see these animals in real life!
Our day started with an exciting bus ride to the zoo. We chatted with our friends about the animals we were most excited to see—and there were plenty! When we arrived, we were amazed by the variety of animals from all around the globe. We saw majestic lions, fierce tigers, enormous elephants, and some of our Australian favourites like kangaroos and koalas. We even saw a massive crocodile with big, sharp teeth!
After a fun and educational day exploring the zoo, we hopped back on the bus to return to school. To celebrate our fantastic day out, we enjoyed a delicious ice block with our friends. It was the perfect end to a wild and wonderful adventure!
The Year 1 teachers would like to congratulate all Year 1 students for showing respect, curiosity, and enthusiasm throughout the day. We can’t wait to see how their zoo experience inspires their next pieces of writing.
Miss Lynch would like to thank all the Auburn North teachers who attended the excursion and helped create such wonderful memories for our students.
Miss Lynch would especially like to thank Miss Doughty for organising the excursion.
