Dear Parents,
We and the other members of the Auburn North staff hope you and your families are well. It is our pleasure to write the Principal’s Message to you each fortnight while Mr Harris is on leave.
As you know, our 2025 School Saying is:
“Auburn North Family
It’s Our Year To Thrive.
So Let’s Make 2025
The Year Of Our Lives”.
We are proud to share with you that all students have returned to school focused on their learning and are doing their best to thrive in all areas this term.
During our 9am morning assemblies, students sometimes recite our School Saying in front of the assembly. Students and teachers also refer to our School Saying during learning time. This year, we are focusing on further extending students by asking them to not only know the School Saying, but reflect on and answer the following two questions:
- In what area are you going to thrive this year?
- How are you going to thrive in this area?
These questions aim to help students think more deeply about their learning, their goals, and how they will thrive in their learning this year.
Recently, some of our students have provided the following responses to these two questions:
“I am going to thrive in my reading by reading with more expression.”
“I will thrive in my writing by using more sophisticated language.”
“I am going to improve in addition and subtraction by using the jump strategy.”
“I will thrive in multiplication by using more efficient strategies.”
“I am going to thrive in history by learning more about the past.”
“I am going to thrive by being a good friend and being kind.”
As you can see, students have reflected on specific learning areas and also our values. We are proud of the way ALL of our students are bringing our School Saying to life this year.
PUBLIC EDUCATION WEEK
Next Week is ‘Public Education Week’. This year’s theme is “Ignite Your Potential”.
We know you share our belief that each of our students has the potential to achieve anything and everything they aspire to achieve.
We know that every day our teachers ignite student interest and support students to reach their potential.
We also know that when our teachers, students and parents work together as one team, we can reach our potential as not only individuals, but as a school learning community.
We look forward to welcoming families to visit classrooms next Thursday morning, where you will see our teachers “igniting potential” and students “thriving” in their learning.

Welcome back to Term 3.
We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break with your families. It has been lovely to see all the boys and girls in 1V return with big smiles, ready to learn and reconnect with their peers. This term promises to be full of exciting learning opportunities, new challenges and plenty of creative and engaging activities. We will continue to build on the skills that were developed in Semester 1 while encouraging greater independence, confidence and collaboration in the classroom.
Literacy
In Term 2, students were learning to write narratives. Students learned how to plan their stories effectively using simple structures that included an orientation (beginning), complication (middle) and resolution (ending). 1V students put great effort into using descriptive language to bring the characters and settings to life in their narratives. Each week, students published their work using their best handwriting hoping to be one of the students selected to display their work on the ‘Wow Wall’. Alongside narratives, the boys and girls in 1V strengthened their reading and phonic skills through daily activities that supported fluency, comprehension and speaking and listening.
Numeracy
In Term 2, our young mathematicians continued to build a strong foundation in numeracy and developed a real love of counting! All students have enthusiastically explored counting forwards by 2s, 5s and 10s, using hands on materials, number lines, and group activities to strengthen their number fluency and confidence. We also worked on understanding basic addition and subtraction strategies, with students learning to solve simple number problems using drawings, concrete materials and mental maths. The boys and girls in 1V have enjoyed applying these skills to real-life contexts in maths games.
It has been a wonderful year of growth and curiosity in numeracy so far, and I am looking forward to seeing these skills continue to develop for the remainder of the year.
KLAs
In Term 2, 1V students completed a fantastic unit in Music, where we explored a range of music elements through hands-on and creative experiences. We learnt about dynamics (loud and soft), tempo (fast and slow), beat and the structure of a song. Through singing and movement, all the boys and girls in 1V gained a deeper understanding of how music is created and performed. A highlight of the unit was making their own maracas using recycled materials. Students had a great time using their hand made instruments to experiment with beat and rhythm.
When the Music unit came to an end, we started getting ready to put on our dancing shoes as we begin preparing for our cultural dance for Community Festival Day. The children are buzzing with enthusiasm as we start learning choreography and getting the performance ready.
I am so proud of all the boys and girls in 1V and their achievements so far. I can’t wait for you to see what they’ve produced – especially as we head into the term and begin preparations for the exciting dance concert.
Thank you so much for reading.
Ms Van Vuuren
Literacy in Focus
What’s Ahead in Year 3 Reading and Writing
This term in Year 3 Literacy, students will dive into narrative writing inspired by high-quality texts and the themes within them. They will learn how to use figurative language, including similes, metaphors and personification, to create vivid and engaging stories. A key focus will be on the ‘show, don’t tell’ technique to bring characters and settings to life. Students will plan their stories carefully, considering structure and language choices to suit imaginative purposes. They will also practise writing narratives with a clear orientation, complication and resolution, developing strong characters and meaningful storylines.
Maths Matters
What’s Ahead in Year 3 Numeracy
This term in Year 3 Numeracy, 3P will continue working hard to achieve their number goals. Students will focus on key areas including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions. Daily maths mental activities will help build fluency and confidence with numbers, while targeted practise tasks support mastery of these essential skills. Later in the term, we will engage in hands-on lessons to explore other strands of maths, including volume, capacity, position and time. Together, these activities will help 3P make strong progress in their numeracy learning.
Stage 2 Excursion: Exploring History with Ranger Jamie
Stage 2 students had an incredible opportunity to step back in time during their excursion to The Rocks as part of their History unit. Guided by enthusiastic Rangers, students explored key colonial buildings such as the old bank, hospital, police station and even the sewer canal, learning how these structures helped establish the early colony. Along the way, they compared the lives of the wealthy and elite with those of the working class by examining real examples of historical housing. At Observatory Hill, students used their imagination to sketch the Sydney Harbour view as it appears today, and then recreated what they believed it might have looked like in 1788. This hands-on learning experience brought history to life and gave students a deeper appreciation of Australia’s colonial past.
