Dear Parents,
We and the other members of the Auburn North staff hope you and your families are well.
The past fortnight has been particularly special for our school learning community for the following reasons:
- We proudly received two very special State Secretary’s Awards,
- We featured in the Daily Telegraph newspaper,
- Our parent participation and engagement programs have continued to be very successful, including our Kindergarten Parents as Partners in Learning Workshop and Public Education Week Open Classrooms, and
- Outstanding teaching and learning has continued each and every day.
TWO SECRETARY’S AWARDS FOR “OUTSTANDING SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT” IN TEACHER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
Each week, our teachers participate in professional learning programs and workshops that have been developed by our school leaders.
Over the past year, teachers have dedicated their time to learning about the new NSW English and Mathematics Syllabus documents in order to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence to write and implement high quality English and Mathematics lessons and teaching programs.
These professional learning programs involved teachers engaging in interactive workshops to learn new content, collaboratively reviewing and developing lesson plans, observing colleagues, and reflecting on their own teaching practice. These professional learning programs were integrated with and supported by our ongoing instructional coaching program coordinated by our grade facilitators (supervisors).
All NSW public schools were eligible to submit a nomination for a Public Education Award. Nominations needed to outline the scope of the program and the results it achieved in terms of teacher professional learning outcomes and student learning outcomes. We submitted a nomination for both our English teacher professional learning program, and our Mathematics teacher professional learning program.
We are very proud that out of all nominations from schools across the state, Auburn North was selected to receive not one, but TWO Secretary’s Awards in the “Outstanding School Initiative” category. That is, we received a Secretary’s Award for both our English and Mathematics professional learning programs.
Both awards acknowledge the excellence of the professional learning programs that were developed by our school leaders and put into practice by our teachers.
Importantly, these two awards acknowledge the effort and dedication of each of our teachers, and the outstanding student learning outcomes they achieve.
Our teachers and leaders have been, and continue to be, so committed to their professional learning and becoming the best teachers and leaders they can possibly become because they know this will result in them having the greatest possible impact on the learning and wellbeing of Auburn North students.
Thank you and congratulations to ALL staff on this superb achievement.

Our day began by saying goodbye to our families and waving to them from our buses as we began our journey to Mosman. For most of us, this was our first experience spending the night away from home. The drive was very relaxing and we got to see some amazing views on our way there, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Anzac Bridge and even the Opera House.
When we arrived at the zoo, our educator Kat was already so impressed with the way all Auburn North students showed our school values. We heard some of the educators say, “These students are so well mannered” and “Auburn North looks like the type of school I’d want to go places with”.
The first animals we met were reptiles. Students were so brave in touching and petting the blue tongue lizard and shingleback lizard. During our stay at the zoo, we had so many opportunities to interact with different animals. We were able to see some tigers cuddling at night, the walruses sleeping, and even Bondi the talented seal. We were so brave when interacting with all of the animals, including the reptiles and amphibians.
Sleeping at the zoo meant that we fell asleep listening to the sounds of chimps laughing and birds chirping. It was such a joy. We were so organised and had our sleeping bags ready to go. We even had hand warmers to keep us warm throughout the night and the following day. Some students were so excited that it took them a while to fall asleep. It’s not every day that you get to sleep at the zoo with your friends.
We ended our experience by watching the seal show and having a self-paced tour around the zoo. The weather was perfect, and we enjoyed our stay. The bus ride was very quiet on the way back to school as we were exhausted. However, the fun did not stop there. When we arrived at school, we were greeted by all our peers who stayed at school. We enjoyed a delicious slice of pizza and a cookie together and shared some of our highlights. This was an experience like no other.
We would like to thank all of the teachers who spent their evening with us. Thank you Mrs Luk, Mrs Varley, Ms Olle, Mrs Khan, Mrs Ianitelli, and Mr Harris for joining the students and I on this special excursion.
We hope to attend more overnight excursions in the future.
From exciting lessons and special school events, 2J has been busy learning, growing and having fun. Here’s a look at some of the highlights from our classroom so far this term.
Literacy
Students in 2J have been diving into the world of narrative writing, using imaginative picture prompts to inspire our stories. We've focused on learning how to plan each stage of a narrative and structure our writing effectively. Students have especially enjoyed crafting entertaining problems for their characters and thinking creatively about how to resolve them.
We have also been engaged in weekly grammar lessons to support and enhance our writing. Through a variety of fun and interactive activities, we have been learning how to use the correct tense, as well as exploring literary devices such as onomatopoeia and alliteration to make our narrative writing more engaging and creative.
2J are putting in great effort to become fluent and expressive readers too. We’re learning to read with expression and to group words in a way that sounds smooth and natural.
Numeracy
2J has thrived in demonstrating our mathematical skills. We have been learning how to round numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. A fun rhyme helped us remember whether to round numbers up or down, making the learning both memorable and enjoyable.
We’ve also been exploring a variety of addition strategies, including Counting On, Bonds of 10, Doubles, Near Doubles, and the Jump Strategy, to solve word problems. By carefully reading each question, circling the important information, and then selecting the most effective strategy, we’re becoming more confident and capable problem solvers.
KLAs
In science, we’ve been learning all about the Physical World. That means we’re exploring cool things like light, sound, and heat energy. We also had lots of fun learning about forces which are pushes and pulls that can make things move, stop, or change direction.
In CAPA, students have been super busy creating amazing artwork for our upcoming Book Week! The book we are exploring is "We Live in a Bus" by Dave Petzold. It’s a fun and heartwarming story about a family who turns a bus into their home and finds clever and creative ways to live, learn, and enjoy life together on the road. We can’t wait for you to visit the library soon to view all the fantastic artwork we’ve made to celebrate this special story!
In Sport, we’ve been full of energy and excitement as we practice our special dance for the upcoming Community Festival Day in Term 4! We have been working hard and can’t wait to show you all their groovy moves on the big day.
Thank you for reading our newsletter.
Mrs Lee
KH are absolutely thrilled to share some of their wonderful achievements so far this term. Our students have been thriving in all areas of their learning, and it has been a pleasure to see their dedication and enthusiasm shine through in all their achievements.
Literacy
This term in literacy, KH has been exploring Level 2 and 3 decodable texts with growing confidence. Some KH students have even begun exploring Level 4 decodable texts, which is a testament to the hard work our students put into thriving in their learning. This term, we have started learning all Level 3 sounds. This has helped students develop their ability to sound out and blend words, which is helping them become more fluent readers every day.
In writing, KH has been working hard to write interesting sentences on various topics. The students particularly enjoyed writing about farm animals like pigs, cows, ducks, and more. Our students have also been learning about how to use suffixes -s and -ing to enhance their sentence writing.
Numeracy
Our numeracy lessons have been full of energy and excitement! KH students have been developing their counting skills, learning to count forwards to 100 and backwards from 30. One of our main goals this term has been learning to create equal groups using concrete materials such as counters, blocks and pom-poms. KH students are also learning to record their findings by drawing and writing their mathematical discoveries like true mathematicians.
Peer Support with Stage 3
KH have been learning how to play various sports and games with their peers in Stage 3. In our sports lesson this term, KH students are working with 5V to play games such as Tunnel Ball and Rob the Nest. We can’t wait to see which other sports and games our students will learn from their Stage 3 buddies.
KH spotlight: Farm Excursion
One of the highlights of our term so far was our exciting excursion to Golden Ridge Animal Farm. The students were thrilled to experience farm life up close and interact with a wide range of farm animals. During our excursion, students explored the farm with wonder and joy as they fed goats and alpacas and cuddled baby chicks and ducklings. The students also had the opportunity to milk a cow and learn about how different animals are cared for on the farm. KH students have excitedly brought back many interesting facts about various farm animals that they now use during our writing lessons.
KH are looking forward to even more learning adventures for the rest of Term 3.

On Tuesday, 4th August 2025, our Kindergarten students embarked on a very special adventure to their first ever school excursion! The buses were buzzing with chatter and excitement as we made our way to Golden Ridge Animal Farm.
From the moment we stepped off the bus, the fun began. Students were greeted by Farmer Keira and Farmer Fiona. Our Kindies took turns bottle feeding baby goats and giggling when the goat’s tiny mouths drank up the milk. They gently patted the goats and alpacas and bravely reached out to hand feed the llamas, which was a highlight for many!
One of the most memorable moments was meeting Penny the Cow. With guidance from the farmers, each student had the chance to try milking her. “I did not know that our yogurt is made by milk!” exclaimed a surprised Osman in KC, while Husnainraza in KS proudly announced, “I am a real farmer now!”
Inside the nursery, the students’ eyes lit up as they held baby rabbits, ducklings, and fluffy chicks. Many children commented on how soft the animals felt, with Aarya in KO whispering, “This bunny feels so cuddly.” It was wonderful to see how gentle and caring the students were, showing patience and kindness with every animal they met.
As the day came to an end, our kindies hopped back onto the bus and the ride home was far quieter than the trip there. The bus was filled with the peaceful sound of sleeping students, no doubt dreaming of their new farmyard friends.
We are so proud of how our kindy students represented our school on their very first excursion. Their curiosity, respect for the animals, and enthusiasm for learning made the day a truly memorable one.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Ms O’Malley for organising such a fantastic experience, and to all the teachers who attended and supported the day. Your efforts helped make this excursion one that our kindies will never forget.
