Dear Parents,
On behalf of the Auburn North staff I would like to congratulate all members of our school learning community who celebrated Eid last week. We hope that it was a very special time for you, your family, and your friends.
Auburn North Is Always Restless To Become An Even Better School
As you know our school invited Vic Zbar and Ross Kimber, two outstanding education consultants from Victoria, to conduct a school review two weeks’ ago. The purpose of the review was to:
- assess the quality of our school as a learning environment for our students, staff, and parents; and to
- make recommendations to assist our school become an even better school for students, staff, and parents.
As communicated in an earlier edition of our school newsletter the areas that were to be reviewed by Mr Zbar and Mr Kimber were:
- Leadership for whole school improvement.
- An orderly learning environment where students are well-known by the staff.
- Curriculum and assessment.
- Ensuring consistently good teaching.
- Professional learning for improved practice.
- Families as partners in learning.
To develop a deep understanding of our school in terms of the areas listed above and to be able to make recommendations for school improvement Mr Kimber and Mr Zbar:
- Observed many classroom lessons.
- Interviewed leaders.
- Interviewed teachers.
- Interviewed parents.
- Interviewed year 4 – year 6 students.
- Analysed a wide range of data
Last week our school received the review and early next term we will take the opportunity to share the report’s findings and recommendations with all parents. We will also explain how we are going to strategically implement each of the recommendations over the next 18 months.
In the meantime you may take pride in reading some of the comments that Mr Kimber and Mr Zbar included in their report. These comments included:
“There is no doubt that significant improvement has occurred at Auburn North since the time of the first review in 2015. What then was considered a ‘very good’ school is now an even better school as a result of the range of initiatives implemented that are described in this report.
It is worth reiterating the observation in the 2015 review report that Auburn North Public School is a very good school. This is reflected in the range of data reported, but also in simply walking around the school where it is evident that students enjoy coming to school, there are strong teacher-student relationships and parents are keenly involved, and an orderly learning environment exists. This is all generally confirmed by the wide range of surveys the school regularly administers on targeted issues to the full range of its stakeholders.
The Auburn North Public School Learning Community should recognise and celebrate its improvement and achievements since the previous whole-school review in 2015.”
During one of my discussions with Mr Zbar and Mr Kimber they explained that it was a credit to our school to be one of the few schools in NSW to request an external review of this sort and they explained that it reflected the fact that ‘Auburn North Is Always Restless To Become An Even Better School’.
I find it very exciting and rewarding to be a member of a school learning community that is always wanting to become even better for our wonderful students.
Congratulations Dancers and Drummers
We were very excited last week to receive the news that our school dance group and our dancers have been selected to participate in the 2019 Granville schools’ Spectacular at the Sydney Opera House later this year. They will be joining our school choir in an experience they will never forget.
I would like to congratulate all students who are in our choir, and dance and drumming group, and their dedicated teachers Mrs McBriarity, Mrs Turk, Mrs Bazzi, Ms Evans, Mrs Bou-Risk, and Ms Whitaker.

National Simultaneous Storytime
On Thursday 23rd May Auburn North PS participated in National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). ANPS was one of over 10,000 locations to simultaneously read the book 'Alpacas with Maracas' by Matt Cosgrove. National Simultaneous Storytime was an opportunity to promote reading to the whole school community and engaged our students, parents and staff.
On the day, younger classes were buddied up with older classes and firstly, students enjoyed listening to the story. Students then participated in an activity based on the book. Some of the activities included making maracas and colouring alpaca masks. Parents were invited into learning spaces to participate in the fun with their children. It was wonderful to see our collaborative and supportive learning community all participating in this fun event.

Peer Support
This term in PD/H/PE 5C are learning about leadership and interpersonal skills. To do this they have taken on a leadership role in mentoring and running sporting activities with Kindergarten students.
5C students set up the activities, collect the Kindergarten students from their class, teach the Kindergarten students how to participate in the activity as well as encouraging them all the way through. Activities that 5C have taught the Kindergarten students are throwing and catching skills, kicking skills and hopping skills.
After the sport sessions we do a reflection on how the session went and how we can improve our communication skills or organisation for the next week.
Students are really enjoying the opportunity to teach Kindergarten and have been using critical thinking skills to find areas that they can improve on for the next week.

1C Writing News
This term, all Year 1 students have been learning to respond to texts in writing. This week, we read the text ‘Willy and the Cloud’ by Anthony Browne. Willy was very sad and angry in this book, Year 1 students decided to plan an adventure with Willy that would cheer him up and make him really happy! All of the students in 1C were so creative! One student was taking Willy to Candyland and they were going to ride a slide together into a chocolate pool! We are very proud of our writing and we hope that we made Willy happy.

1C Maths News
This week in mathematics, 1C and all Year 1 students have been learning to read analogue and digital clocks to the half hour. To be successful in meeting the learning goals throughout the week, students needed to make and describe the position of the long hand and the short hand on the clock. Students were also required to use the correct mathematical language of ‘o’clock’ and ‘half past’ to tell the time. At the end of the week when all students could confidently tell the time on both analogue and digital clocks we made our own watches! Each student made one watch that showed the analogue time and one watch that showed the time digitally. We were all so excited to have our own watches!

1C Science News
This term in science, 1C and all Year 1 students are learning about earth’s natural resources such as soil and water. This week, we started growing our own plant! We have to water our plant every day and make weekly observations on how our plants are growing. We can’t wait to see how much they grow in the next few weeks!
