Auburn North shines and stars ...again!
The Head of the NSW Department of Education is the Secretary, Mr Mark Scott. Each year a very small number of NSW public primary schools and high schools are selected to receive a ‘NSW Secretary’s Award for Excellence’. I am very proud to inform you that Auburn North Public School was selected to receive not one but TWO ‘2019 Secretary’s Awards for Excellence’.
From the more than 2,200 public schools in NSW, Auburn North was the ONLY school to receive TWO awards. In fact, our school was the ONLY school to be selected to receive both awards last year as well.
This extraordinary achievement reflects so positively on the outstanding quality of our school learning community and our students, staff, and parents.
Our Auburn North Public School Learning Community was selected to receive the:
- ‘2019 Secretary’s Award for An Outstanding School Initiative Award'; and the
- ‘2019 Secretary’s School Achievement Award’.
Our school was selected to receive the ‘2019 Secretary’s Award for An Outstanding School Initiative Award’ for our ‘Leadership for Whole-School Improvement’ initiative.
Research shows the quality of a school’s leadership team is one of the greatest factors that assist students achieve high quality learning outcomes. Therefore, leadership development has been a major priority at Auburn North for the past 20 years.
Auburn North’s 2018-2019 ‘Leadership for Whole-School Improvement’ initiative has significantly improved the leadership capacity of the distributed leadership team of 12 members and the knowledge, skills and abilities of each member and, according to data, led to Auburn North becoming an even better and more high-performing school for students, staff, and parents.
Auburn North leaders have participated in high quality leadership development programs and initiatives including the Executive Ready Program, researching most effective leadership strategies for improved team performance, and participating in weekly workshops. Leaders have then effectively used their skills in a variety of ways including:
- assisting students with their learning in classrooms;
- regularly meeting, mentoring and coaching Auburn North teachers;
- coordinating outstanding professional learning programs for teachers;
- organising grade workshops and collaborative planning programs; and
- analysing videos of themselves teaching or their teachers teaching lessons.
Our school was selected to receive the ‘2019 Secretary’s School Achievement Award’ for our ‘Parents as Partners in Learning’ program.
Auburn North’s ‘Parents as Partners in Learning’ program was developed and implemented in response to research that shows when parents are involved in their children’s education students perform better at school, and in response to the desire of Auburn North parents to further develop their knowledge and skills to assist their children’s learning.
As you know, the program has involved parents participating in small group, grade-based workshops where they have worked with their children’s teachers to develop an understanding of how their children learn literacy, numeracy, and technology in their classrooms, and have developed the skills to assist their children at home with their learning.
Evidence clearly demonstrates that the ‘Parents as Partners in Learning’ program has had a profound positive impact on participating parents and has assisted their children further develop their learning.
I hope you feel very proud to be the member of our multi-award-winning public school learning community that is recognised as being a leader in the area of education. I also hope you feel proud to be a member of a learning community that is always striving to become a better home-away-from-home for its students, parents, and staff.
FATHER’S DAY STALL
This year’s Father’s Day stall was a great success. All Auburn North students had the opportunity to select from a wide range of gifts to give to the Dads on Father’s Day to help their Dads enjoy a day they will always remember always.
The stall was a fabulous success due to the hard work of a number pf parents. In particular, I would like to thank Mrs Zenna Diab, Mrs Acar, and Mrs Zreika for purchasing and preparing the gifts. I would also like to thank Mrs Apaydin, Mrs Salem, Mrs Aho, Mrs Asfaq, and Mr Acar for assisting the children select their gifts from the stall.

On Thursday the 29th of August, Mrs Turk, Mrs Bou Rizk, Mrs Bazzi, Mrs Mcbriarty, Ms Evans, Ms Whitaker, 28 dancers, 28 choir students and 4 drummers had the privilege to perform in front of thousands of people at the world famous Sydney Opera House.
All teachers and students arrived at school by 7:30am, hopped on a big bus and travelled to the Opera House ready for a fun-filled day. When we arrived, we very quickly got dressed in our costumes for a full dress rehearsal. After our very successful dress rehearsal, we had the opportunity to watch other schools practice their items on the big Opera House stage. The Opera house choir students also did a fantastic job at rehearsing 8 different songs together in harmony with many other schools from the Granville district. Afterwards, we joined the choir on stage to practice our fabulous finale to the song ‘September’ by Earth, Wind & Fire.
After our rehearsals, we were then ready for a delicious dinner as an Auburn North family. We braved the heavy rains and walked over to ‘City Extra’ for dinner and dessert. After dinner we were ready for our big performance on stage. By this time, we were all very excited for our performance and to see all our wonderful parents who had travelled to watch us perform. After our very successful performances on stage we travelled back to school very quietly as lots of students fell asleep on the bus. We all had a fantastic day and night and all the teachers were incredibly proud of all of the effort students put in over the past 3 terms for this spectacular event.
Maths
We have been learning to make and recognise number combinations that make 10 using a ten frame.
We are learning how to recognise a small collection of objects quickly and without counting.
We are learning to compare length by directly placing object side by side and aligning the ends to determine which object is longer or shorter with everyday objects.

Writing
We are learning to write interesting sentences. We can use pronouns in our writing. We can use describing words to add more detail to our writing. We can join two ideas together using conjunctions. Here are some of our outstanding work samples!

Geography
We are learning about maps. Here is a map of the story “We’re going on a bear hunt”. We used symbols to represent different places in the story.
We are learning how the location of Aboriginal places such waterholes, meeting place, campsites can be represented using Aboriginal symbols through pictorial maps.

3R celebrated Book Week by creating these ‘super’ artworks inspired by this year’s theme: “Reading is my secret power”. We designed our own superheroes and used newspaper for the background. We then accompanied our heroes with comic-style onomatopoeia. Our class was very impressed by how they turned out and believe our superheroes are definitely news worthy.
