FLL Lego Robotics Competition
On Friday 15th November, 29 students from years 5 and 6 along with Miss McGrory and Miss Gerdes went to the FLL (First Lego League) regional robotics competition at Prairiewood High School.
Four teams represented Auburn North Public School on the day:
- City Crafterz
- City Generations
- The Next Generation
- Future City Technology
These teams competed against other primary schools and many high school students.
Each team had four areas they were judged on. These included:
- their research project
- the core values which are similar to our school values
- the design of their robot
- the robot missions
The research project involved presenting their teams solution to a problem that they had been solving throughout the term. This year’s theme was 'City Shapers' and students had to find a solution to a problem within the school. Some of the solutions included redesigning the bubblers, improving our COLA so wind and rain didn’t get in, renovating the Newcombe ball courts, and updating our asphalt areas to make them more interesting for kids to play on.
All teams demonstrated our school values on the day and showed character, citizenship and collaboration as things didn’t always go to plan.
While four teams entered the competition, all teams shared their knowledge and expertise to ensure that every team was successful on the day.
Two teams received a trophy on the day. They were:
- 'City Generations' received the ‘Mechanical Design’ award. This award was given to the team who had the best robot design and the best programs.
- 'The Next Generation' received the ‘Robot Performance’ award. This award was presented to the team that achieved the highest score during the robot missions. Teams had three opportunities to run their robot on the game mat to score the most points.
I would like to thank Miss McGrory and Miss Gerdes for taking the students on this excursion.

Thank You to the Mohammed Family
Last week Mr Khaja Mohammed and Mrs Asma Parveen, the parents of Ayesha who is in year 3, very generously donated a large number of brand new books and games to our school. These resources will be made available to our students and we know that they will thoroughly enjoy reading the books and playing the games with their friends. Thank you so much Mr Mohammed and Mrs Asma.

Featherdale Wildlife Excursion
On Monday the 4th of November, all the students of Year 1 went on an amazing excursion to Featherdale Wildlife Park! All this term we have been learning about the Australian animals that live at Featherdale, and have been writing incredible information texts about these animals.
Our day started with a fun bus ride all the way to the park and we talked about all the animals we were excited to see. When we arrived at Featherdale, we saw lots of animals like echidnas, emus, dingoes, wombats and ghost bats.
During the day, all Year 1 classes visited the Learning Burrow where we met Lauren, the zookeeper. Lauren taught us all about the animals at Featherdale and showed us how to carefully pat them. We met four animals. Their names were Leo the Koala, Hazel the Quokka, Luigi the Shingleback Lizard and Winston the Snake.
After that, we walked around the park and looked at other animals like wallabies and kangaroos. We were able to go into the kangaroo enclosure which everybody loved! We were careful to shut the gate behind us so the kangaroos couldn’t escape. Miss Mirzai was so kind and surprised us with kangaroo food. The friendly, hungry kangaroos kept following us to get their delicious lunch.
The best part of the day was the crocodile feeding! We watched patiently as the zookeeper amazed us with interesting crocodile facts. Using a pole, the zookeeper then tempted the crocodile with a delicious piece of raw chicken. While the zookeeper was talking, suddenly, the crocodile launched itself one metre out of the water and ripped the chicken off the pole. The crowd was so excited to witness such a spectacular sight!
Finally, it was time to come home on the bus. Every Year 1 student showed all of the Auburn North values throughout the day so they were rewarded with delicious ice blocks when we returned to school.
From Year 1

In 3N we have been learning to describe 2D shapes. During these lessons we used paddle pop sticks and blue tack to create our own regular and irregular 2D shapes. After some critical thinking we decided to add a brace to our shapes, this made them rigid!

This term in 3N we are learning to write a persuasive text. We have been using a range of persuasive devices including rhetorical questions, high modality words, emotive language and cohesive devices while composing our texts. After composing our texts we self and peer edit to further enhance our writing. Some students in 3N have earnt their pen licenses, this means they have consistently demonstrated neat pre-cursive hand writing in their publishing books. We are very eager to be using pens this term!

More than half way through Term 4!
2N has had a fabulous start to Term 4 and we cannot believe it’s already more than half way through Term 4. Our highlights so far this term have been Community Festival Day and our ANTEC lessons.
In our first week of ANTEC, we used different materials such as straws, marshmallows, blutac and sticky tape to create a structure that could hold a book for 10 seconds. We showed our 21st Century learning skills of critical thinking, collaboration and communication with our peers throughout the whole activity. Some of the structures were successful and we celebrated by cheering our friends on. Some structures were unsuccessful but this allowed us to reflect and think about what we could do better next time. We think that this is so important because reflecting allows us to become better! In another week, we used Spheros which is a robotic toy that can be controlled through an iPad to move in whatever direction we control it. We had so much fun practising to move them around, and we even had a race with our class! The reason why we are using Spheros this term is to develop our information and communication technologies skills. We have created a map from Auburn North Public School to the Auburn Botanic Gardens and we will be using the Spheros to direct us from one place to the other! We are so excited and we cannot wait to continue using the Spheros throughout the term.
2N has had an amazing Term 4 so far and we cannot believe that there are only a few weeks left until the holidays where we will be in Year 3 when we come back. We are so excited to move onto Year 3 so that we can learn new things and make new memories, while cherishing the old ones.

There are many important events coming up at the end of this term. Make sure you know when they are happening by checking the Schoolzine calendar.
