Dear Parents,
EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL LIFE
Last week I read an article that was written by Dr Craig Challen. Craig was the joint recipient of the 2019 ‘Australian of the Year Award’. You may remember Craig. He made worldwide headlines when he joined an international team to rescue 12 boys and their school coach from a cave in Thailand.
In the article, Craig explained that over the past year that he had become the ambassador for an Australian charity and that his work has reinforced his belief that education is the key to a successful life. An extract from the article is reproduced below.
“There is, in fact, no single greater predicator of one’s success in life than education. Health, longevity, wealth, happiness, or the strength of social relationships, all are strongly dependent on education. It follows then that the single best thing we can do to improve people’s lives is to assist them achieve educationally.”
I think it’s accurate to say that all members of the Auburn North Public School Learning Community agree with Craig’s point of view. We all believe that EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL LIFE and we have planned for our students to receive the highest possible standard of education in 2020.
2020 SCHOOL SAYING
Each year our school develops a ‘SCHOOL SAYING’. The purpose of the ‘School Saying’ is to provide students with a clear focus for their learning, attitude, and behaviour for that particular year. During the first two weeks of each school year, students, staff and parents are able to nominate ‘Sayings’ to be considered for selection.
I am very pleased to inform you that our 2020 Saying was suggested by Fatima Khan, one of our Year 5 students. Fatima’s and our whole-school 2020 School Saying is:
‘IN 2020,
WE WILL WORK as ONE TEAM
TO ACHIEVE EVERY DREAM’
I know that each of our students will soon start developing their 2020 SCHOOL DREAMS that they would like to see become a reality this year. I also know their wonderful teachers are in the process of developing high quality, engaging, harmonious class families that will support each student realise their 2020 dreams.
I encourage all parents to speak with their children and assist them develop a list of Dreams that the students would like to see become a reality by the end of this year.

5C are learning how to be healthy during PDHPE lessons this Term. Recently we learnt about the Australian Government’s dietary guidelines and investigated the different ingredients in our food. We then calculated the amount of sugar in different items and was shocked by the results! The results were very interesting and will help us to make smart choices about the food and drinks we are consuming on a regular basis.
What an incredible start to the year 2M have had! After settling back into routines after a long break we got straight into our learning. 2M have begun guided reading rotations where students are in groups and rotate to different activities including handwriting, spelling, read-to-self and Study Ladder on the laptops. Using the laptops everyday is helping to improve the tech and typing skills of the students.
2M have also been writing informative texts with headings, sub-headings, appropriate punctuation and compound sentences. So far, they have written all about lions and elephants and they can’t wait to begin Writing Jungles in week 4 so they can continue learning and writing about different animals! The year 2 writing program is also linked with the creative arts program so students have been making animals for art that match the animal they have been writing about.
Finally, the boys and girl in 2M learned a brand-new addition strategy called near doubles. They were super excited to be learning this new strategy and will continue to practise it over the term.

What is a Gold Badge?
Students at ANPS are encouraged to "do the right thing and be in the right place, at the right time" through a tiered reward program. Students are given the opportunity to move from an entry level of green to the highest level of gold.
A Gold Badge is presented to students at special assemblies by their parents. These students are selected for their excellence in citizenship, attendance and punctuality, wearing full school uniform and consistent effort. Gold badge winners are rewarded each term with special prizes culminating in a fantastic excursion to the movies.
How do you get a Gold Badge?
- Nominations open
- Check with all class teachers and support teachers
- Nominations checked by all staff
- Gold badge letters sent out to families to invite them to the assembly
- Gold badge assembies are held twice a term.
- Gold badge rewards are held once a term.
