Dear Parents,
AUBURN NORTH IS ‘THE GATEWAY TO SUCCESS’
Over the past 20 years I have had the privilege of watching a whole generation of students graduate from Auburn North to then grow up to become very successful people. Auburn North really is ‘THE GATEWAY TO SUCCESS’.
Our students grow up to be bright, happy, well-rounded, successful adults and they have all made major contributions to our country. Fatima Haq is an example of the outstanding, successful young people our learning community has produced over the past 20 years.
Fatima is a former Auburn North student. After graduating from Auburn North, Fatima studied at Auburn Girls High School, one of our local high schools. Fatima obviously studied very hard at Auburn Girls because she received the school’s highest 2019 ATAR at the end of last year. Fatima received an ATAR of 98.40. This is an extraordinary result!
Fatima achieved a Band 6 in English Advanced, Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1, Physics, and Economics.
This year Fatima has just commenced a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree, majoring in mechatronic engineering, and a Bachelor of Business degree. Fatima has also received a Vice Chancellor’s Merit Scholarship. CONGRATULATIONS Fatima. We are very proud of you.
FIVE QUALITIES OF GREAT TEACHERS
I was reading an education article last week and as I read it I thought of Fatima. I thought of the way in which she must have been inspired and nurtured by her primary school and high school teachers.
The article was titled ‘Five Qualities of Great Teachers’ and it was written by David de Carvalho. I believe the article highlights some of the qualities of the Auburn North teachers when Fatima attended Auburn North, and it most definitely identifies some of the qualities of the wonderful teachers who are teaching at Auburn North this year.
Please find below some extracts from the article:
“The role of teachers in helping young people discover themselves and the world – and how they can then shape the world – is why teaching is the most important job in the world. But it is also the most important job for the world.”
No other occupation offers as many ways to help others learn and grow in their most formative years and take responsibility for their own lives. But what makes a teacher great?
Here are five aspects of what great teaching has always been, is now, and always will be:
1. OPEN TO LEARNING AND IMPROVEMENT
Great teachers will always aspire to be the best teachers they can be. They will be open to learning, they will aspire to excellence and will constantly think about ways to improve their practice. They will take their professional learning seriously, evaluating those experiences and offerings through the lens of whether it is going to lead them to changing the way they teach for the benefit of their students.
2. PROVIDING RESPECTFUL, STRUCTURED LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
A good teacher will be respected. Teaching is not limited to transmission of subject knowledge, and at its best, it deeply involves the growth of the whole student as a human being.
Certainly, great teaching involves a good relationship with students. Those good relationships are based on trust, expertise and respect, on being fair, being reliable, being a person of your word, a person who offers structure and consistency in order to provide a classroom environment where learning happens.
3. SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE AND PASSION
Many of us, in choosing to become teachers, have been inspired by great teachers we had at school – people who showed they were committed to intellectual and personal development by the way they taught. In particular, it was their deep knowledge and passion for their subject that was inspiring.
‘Fanning the flames of wonder’ is the best summary I have ever heard of the role of teaching.
4. INSPIRING QUESTIONS AND FANNING THE FLAMES OF WONDER
A great teacher has the ability to inspire students to ask more questions, not just answer them. Their role in leading students to knowledge is to make them hungrier and thirstier for more knowledge, more skills, more understanding.
A good lesson will conclude with students knowing they have learnt something, but a great lesson will conclude with students being unsatisfied with what they’ve learnt, wanting to learn more, and asking more questions. That’s fanning the flames of wonder. That’s great teaching.
And the nature of their questions will branch out in an ever-widening circle of interests and concerns. Which brings me to a fifth dimension of great teachers.
5. UNDERSTANDING THE WIDER PURPOSES OF EDUCATION
Knowing yourself and examining one’s life in a systematic and fundamentally honest way, so as to become wise – this is the most profound outcome of a successful education.
Developing in students a commitment to thoughtful, honest, purposeful human agency, respectful of others and embracing the common concerns of one’s communities, this is the wider objective of the calling of a teacher: to help young people come to know themselves and the power they have to change the world.
When teachers do these things well, their conversations with their students about knowledge and the world under construction will flourish from the creative and critical thinking of a new generation of lifelong learners who understand that they have minds, and that they can use them responsibly for the common good.

The 4B students were actively involved collaborative art this term with 4P and 4A.
We began our art by drawing and outlining a bridge which was then painted using water colours. We made funny faces as our pictures were taken so that it could be added to our artwork. Lastly, we added a frame to our art piece.
This art piece was inspired by the very famous artwork called ‘The Scream’ by Edvard Munch.
1L have had a fantastic term so far! We all love coming to school and we definitely will “work as one team to achieve every dream”.
In numeracy, we have been learning how to use friends of 10 to add. We have been playing lots of fun games such as circle champion and 3 in a row game to help us learn all the friends of 10 facts. We have also learnt how to count on from the larger number to help us add two numbers together.
We have been learning to write informative texts by focusing on a sea creature each week. We enjoy using our bookmarks to help us achieve our learning goal in every writing lesson. We are also super excited as we started our Year One Writing Aquarium. We get to work with fabulous teachers to help us become outstanding writers.
In PD/H, we looked at what makes us special and unique. We found out that some people in 1L can speak more than 2 languages! We have also enjoyed going in the hall every Tuesday afternoon to play some fun games for sport. Our favourite activities are four corners and the chicken dance.
In science, we are learning about living things, their environment and how they change and reproduce. Students will investigate how plants and animals are used to satisfy our needs for food and fibre.
