Dear Parents,
I would like to thank you for your cooperation in responding to our school’s modified organisation in response to the need to adhere to social distancing requirements. We are blessed at Auburn North to have parents and teachers who ALWAYS work together in perfect harmony to ensure that our students become the very best young people they can become.
Exciting News – Our School Selected for New Powerhouse Museum Exhibition
We are so excited! Last month we were contacted by a curator from The Powerhouse Museum who is working with a team to develop a new exhibition for their museum. The exhibition will demonstrate some of the ways in which Australia and our different agencies rapidly and effectively responded to the COVID-19 global pandemic.
The team had seen evidence on Twitter of the outstanding way in which the Auburn North teaching team ensured that all students were able to connect, engage and succeed during the six weeks of remote learning and wanted to acquire some potential artefacts for inclusion in this exhibit. They were particularly interested in our blended approach to remote learning which combined both hard-copy learning materials with the effective use of technology.
We have proudly shared one of our 'Learning From Home' packs with the Powerhouse Museum. The pack is complete with differentiated learning booklets, stationery and hands-on materials such as board games. We have also shared examples of the innovative and engaging learning videos that our wonderful teachers produced to complement the booklets and screenshots of the way in which Seesaw, Class Dojo and Canvas and SchoolZine were used so effectively by students, teachers and parents for continuity of learning and communication during this time.
This means that national and international visitors to the museum, whether it be in Sydney or in Parramatta in two years’ time, will be able to enjoy looking at and learning about the way one outstanding Australian school (yes, Auburn North) responded strategically and successfully to the COVID-19 situation.
I hope you share my pride in knowing that for decades to come visitors to The Powerhouse Museum will be able to see and learn about Auburn North's contribution to Australia's modern history.
Semester 1 Report Information:
In past years at Auburn North we have:
- held three-way-conferences for students, teachers, and parents at the end of Term 1; and
- sent Semester 1 reports (terms 1 and 2) home at the end of Term 2.
However, due to the COVID-19 situation we have had to change our usual conference and reporting organisation. We expect that:
- Semester 1 reports will be going home week 5 in Term 3; and
- Meetings between teachers and parents will be held after the reports go home. (More information about these meetings will be included in the next edition of the school newsletter.)
In line with advice from the NSW Department of Education:
- our school reports for Semester 1 (ie Term 1 and 2) have been adjusted to cater for and reflect on student learning from school and at home.
- the Semester 1 report will not grade student achievement using our usual Attainment Key (‘Outstanding’, ‘High’, ‘Sound’, ‘Basic’ and ‘Limited’) but instead ‘Above Expectation’, ‘Working at Year Level’, and ’Requires Consolidation’.
- the report will focus on key skills in English and mathematics as well as learning that students have undertaken in other KLAS (i.e. Subjects); Science, History, Creative Arts.
- the report will also provide information about student attendance and their commitment to learning.
Class Reports
I would like to thank the students of 1/KZ, 4P and 6V, and their teachers Ms Zeidan, Mr Prendergast and Mrs Varley for their excellent class reports.

Writing
This week Writing Aquarium resumed and Year 1 students have been learning to respond to texts. This week they read the text ‘Willy and Hugh’ by Anthony Browne. Willy was very lonely in the book and ended up bumping into Hugh where they became best friends. 1/KZ students were very creative and wrote a letter to their best friend listing all their great qualities. Meanwhile, Kindy in the Turtles group have been writing their own sentence! This week we focused on capital letters and finger spaces. We wrote a sentence about frogs, parrots and lions! We are all proud of our writing this week.

Mathematics
This week in mathematics, 1/KZ have been learning about making equal groups in multiplication and division. Both Kindergarten and Year 1 used concrete materials such as teddy bears, counters and dinosaurs to make groups of 2, 3, 4, 5 and even 6! Year 1 were able to identify how many groups and skip count to find out how many altogether in each group. Kindergarten were all successful at sharing objects one at a time into groups, then counting the total.

Music
This term in CAPA, 1/KZ and Year 1 students are learning about following a beat in music! This week, we used percussion instruments such as drums and maracas to follow a beat of a song. Although we were very loud, we worked as a team to make sure we tap, shake or swipe our instruments at the same time. 1/KZ were so successful at this and even made comments such as ‘I am so proud of us!’. Miss Zeidan was very proud of how responsible and keen students were to follow a beat!

4P is incredibly happy to be back at Auburn North Public School! The amazing whiteboard tables in our classroom has been a key feature in all areas of our learning.
In maths this term we have been learning to divide using the inverse strategy. This strategy uses our knowledge of multiplication to help us divide. We have been using the whiteboard tables to show our working out.

We have been using noun groups in our sentences to make our writing more detailed. Using characters from The Big Bad Book we have created some very descriptive sentences. The whiteboard tables are an effective tool to add extra adjectives to our sentences before we share them.
During sport, 4P has begun practicing the skill of collaboration by creating a new game with their peers. Each week students work in their team to add rules to their game and showcase their game to 4P at the end of the lesson. Each team receives feedback from their peers on how their inclusive game can be improved the following week. On the third week 4P will vote for their favourite game which we will play as a class. The whiteboard tables have been a brilliant way to plan how our games will look before we put them into practice. We cannot wait to see what everyone chooses to play!

6V have resumed Term 2 with positive energy and a determination to make the most of every school day. Science, particularly, has been a highlight within the last 2 weeks, as stage 3 engages in learning to investigate forces and energy to create products and systems.
Students have used online tools to understand the components of an electrical circuit, and then trialled online manipulatives to identify how the parts of a circuit are connected to make it work.
The 5 rotations provided students with the opportunity to follow instruction booklets, or experiment, to make circuits that included lights, switches, motors, microphones, buzzers and music. Mrs Ellis also supported 6V in these challenges and was impressed when a group of students created the buzzer handshake prank; one of the electrical circuit options in the booklet.
6V agreed that the hands-on tasks using the electrical circuit kits not only consolidated their understanding, but was also very exciting and satisfying when they collaborated and succeeded in making their circuits work. Their feedback included statements about enjoying the need to persevere in the challenge, thinking creatively, and being able to learn through trial and error.
