Dear Parents,
While this term has been challenging in many ways for our students, parents and teachers due to the COVID-19 situation, our school learning community has come through it with flying colours.
Our students returned to school following their learning from home time enthusiastic to continue to actively engage in their high-quality classroom learning programs and lessons and determined to achieve their learning goals.
In term 1 and term 2 it was apparent that all members of our learning community were committed to see our 2020 SAYING become a reality. As you know, our 2020 saying is

Since their return to school not only have our students been trying very hard with their learning but, as usual, they have been displaying each of our school VALUES which are:

This is the final newsletter this term. The last day of term 2 is next Friday 3rd July. The first day of term 3 for students is Tuesday 21st July.
All members of the Auburn North staff hope you and your families enjoy a wonderful two weeks together.
SEMESTER 1 STUDENT REPORTS
Semester 1 reports will be going home in week 3 of next term. These reports will be a CELEBRATION of some of your children’s successes in term 1 and term 2. Teachers and parents will be communicating with one another the following week but at this stage we do not know if this communication will be in the form of telephone conversations or meetings in our school grounds. The decision will be based on directives from the Department of Education.
MORNING DROP OFFS
We would like to thank our parents for their cooperation in responding to social distancing requirements and our school’s procedures when dropping their children at school in the morning. If parents need to come to the office for any reason in the morning or up until 2.30pm in the afternoon I would like to remind you that you must enter through the small main gate on Adderley Street.
SCHOOL CANTEEN
I would like to thank our excellent school canteen staff for providing high-quality food and service for our students. Please find attached to this newsletter one page of information from the canteen team and a revised copy of their menu. You may want to keep a copy of the menu on your fridge.
CLASS REPORTS
I would like to thank the students of 1W, 2C and 6E, and their teachers Miss Woodward, Miss Wallace and Ms Edwards for their excellent class reports.

Mathematics
This week in mathematics, 1W have been learning to read analogue and digital clocks to the hour and to the half hour. To be successful in meeting the learning goal, students needed to describe the position of the long hand and the short hand on the clock. 1W were great at using mathematical language including ‘hour hand’ and ‘minute hand’.

Reading
1W have been trying so hard to achieve their individual reading goals. Each morning, 1W engage in different literacy rotations where they are able to work on their sight words and complete a range of spelling activities. One of our favourite rotations is reading a familiar and a quality text independently.

Science and Technology
This term in science and technology, Year 1 are learning about living things. 1W were given a challenge to design an environment for a plant to live in. 1W showed creativity and collaboration as they worked together to design and make a greenhouse that would keep a plant alive. We have to water our plant every few days and make sure that it is getting enough light so that it survives. We can’t wait to see how much our plants grow!

2C have truly embraced hands-on learning since returning back to the classroom fulltime, especially in Maths and Science!
Maths
2C have enjoyed participating in “Measurement Monday” over the past few weeks. We have been learning to measure, record, compare and estimate length using informal and formal units. 2C began by measuring the length of objects using our hands and feet. It turns out Miss Wallace is 11 shoes long!
2C then learnt how to use a metre ruler to record lengths and distances. We went to the K-1 asphalt area and used chalk to measure distances up to 10m!

Science
2C have also been busy during our science lessons. We have been learning about living things, so we designed and made a greenhouse for a plant to grow! 2C worked together with a partner to make our greenhouse out of boxes, plastic, straws, paddle pop sticks and masking tape. We will be eagerly watching their plants grow over the next few weeks!

We have been achieving great things in 6E this term. We have shown resilience, persistence and determination. Over the term we have conquered each challenge put before us. The wonderful students of 6E have been able to investigate Australia’s history and construct information reports on the Aboriginal ‘Stolen Generations’. We have also channelled our inner Nikola Tesla and delved into the world of electricity and constructed electrical circuits. We are currently in the very interesting process of designing projects that will display our different circuits with lights, small motors, switches and buzzers.
During the past 2 weeks 6E have been focussed on writing and publishing our book review of Roald Dahl’s ‘James and the Giant Peach’.
It has been fantastic consolidating and extending our knowledge of the writing techniques that authors use to engage their readers. Roald Dahl is famous for his use of figurative language and descriptive language. 6E have been looking closely at the different types of figurative language used in his books including amazing alliteration, idioms for miles, similes that make us as happy as clams and we think that Roald Dahl’s metaphors are shining stars!
