Dear Parents,
Our Auburn North staff hope you and your children enjoyed a happy two-week vacation together. It was so heart-warming to see how excited the students were when they returned to school. I think one student summed up the views of all Auburn North students when she said to her teacher, “I really missed you.”
Why wouldn’t our students miss their teachers? Our girls and boys know that they are most fortunate to have teachers who are so lovely, who are so caring, and who work so hard for them. And, like you, our students know that each one of our Auburn North teachers is an excellent classroom teacher.
While we continue to miss having more than one hundred parents attend our daily whole-school assemblies, and parents participating in a variety of programs such as our ‘Harmony House’ programs and our ‘Parents as Partners in Learning’ program, we look forward to our daily community assemblies and our parent programs re-commencing sometime in the future when it is safe to do so.
In the meantime, please feel confident that your children are working so very hard and learning to the very best of their ability, and I have no doubt that this term will prove to be one of our school’s most successful.
Next week is the NSW Department of Education’s annual ‘Education Week’. As a school we would normally do something special to celebrate this occasion, including parent visits to classrooms however, due to social distancing restrictions, that is not possible this year. Therefore, classes will do something a little special next week to celebrate ‘Education Week’.
While all NSW schools celebrate ‘Education Week’ in some way, at Auburn North we believe that
‘Every Week at Auburn North is Education Week’
Please see below an article and a photo that will be published in next week’s edition of the ‘Auburn Review’ newspaper. As you read the article and look at the photo, I hope you feel very proud to be a member of our special school learning community. The student comments in the article reflect so positively on the learning environment our staff and parents have developed for our students.
Every Week at Auburn North is Education Week
The students, staff and parents at Auburn North Public School believe ‘Every week at Auburn North is Education Week’.
They believe Auburn North is the ‘Gateway to Success’ for all students, and staff and parents work together in perfect harmony to assist all students become the very best young people they can become.
Auburn North is a dynamic learning community for its students, staff and parents, and as a senior officer from the NSW Department of Education said last year, “Auburn North is achieving phenomenal results.”
Auburn North programs and practices have been selected this year by the Powerhouse Museum to be included in its new exhibition.
Last week some students wrote the following:
“I love coming to Auburn North because our teachers encourage and motivate us to become stronger within ourselves.”
“Auburn North is a beautiful, multicultural, diverse and harmonious community that makes everyone feel as if they belong to something extremely special.”
“Auburn North encourages us to strive and assists all of us succeed and move FORWARD.”
“I love coming to Auburn North because as soon as I walk through the gates I’m welcomed by smiling teachers and happy students.”
SEMESTER 1 REPORTS – A CELEBRATION OF STUDENT SUCCESS
Next Friday 7th August, students will take home their Semester 1 Reports. I am sure your children will want to sit down with you next Friday afternoon or night to proudly share their efforts and achievements with you.
I have greatly enjoyed reading and signing each report and it is very clear that our motivated students, our excellent teachers, and our supportive parents have developed very strong and harmonious relationships with one another to facilitate students to learn very effectively and successfully this semester. Their reports really are ‘A Celebration of Success.’
Earlier this week you would have received a note about parent-teacher telephone conferences. The note explained that in the past we have had 3-way conferences for parents, teachers and students in the hall to discuss reports and student progress. The note also explained that due to the present COVID-19 situation, we are going to be having parent-teacher telephone conferences instead. I encourage all parents to take the opportunity to discuss their children’s progress over the telephone with their child’s teacher.

In 5N, ‘We are all friends’ is the motto we stand by. This means that when we work together, we always help everyone. We always strive to be our very best, do what is right and to always be kind and good people. We have been learning many engaging and challenging things in our class.
At the end of last term, we learned about electrical circuits. We created these circuits and put them in our modelled house. At first it was challenging to create our models but with perseverance and ingenuity, we worked together and achieved many great things together. As you can see in our photos, we believe that we succeeded! It was astonishing to see the circuits fit into our homes and to see them light up.

This term, we are challenging ourselves to become great leaders by participating in the Peer Support Program that will take place in Week 4. We are very excited and nervous at the same time. We want to do our very best and not let our peer buddies down. In order to prepare, we looked at different scenarios and did some role plays to look at strategies on how to become the best leaders that we can be.
KG students have had a great first week back and have enjoyed being back in the classroom learning. This week, students have been working hard to write sentences independently. This week we wrote about kangaroos. Students have been practising using capital letters, a full stop and spaces between words. There were so many unique and interesting sentences that students thought of all by themselves! Well done KG.

Class Report: 3W
It has been a truly wonderful beginning to term 3 in 3W. This week, we have focused on developing the 21st Century learning skills of collaboration, character and communication. Each day, we have defined these skills as a class and put these skills into practice through collaborative challenges.
Collaboration
In one of our collaboration tasks, students worked in groups of four to answer the question ‘Are wild animals more free than humans?’ Students were assigned a particular role that played to their individual strengths. These key roles were called the harmoniser, organiser, scribe and reporter. The teams began the task by collaboratively completing a cutting and sorting activity, which allowed students to clearly understand their role within the group. By having a clearly defined and specific role, it was evident that all students had a purpose and a shared sense of ownership of the task.

Communication and Character
The communication and character tasks were quite challenging and tested students’ resilience. However, the determination and grit they showed as a team allowed them to successfully solve the tasks as a group. It was wonderful to see students actively listening to each other and valuing the perspectives and ideas of their peers. They communicated clearly and respectfully with each other which allowed each group to accomplish the challenge.
