Dear Parents,
In one of last week’s newspapers there was an article that was headed ‘Boys can’t keep up with girls in writing results.’ The article emphasised that writing is a key means through which students learn in all curriculum areas in primary school and high school, and it explained that generally speaking by the time many Australian boys reach year 9 they are significantly behind girls in terms of their writing skills.
We certainly don’t want that to be the case with any of our Auburn North students.
The article stated what all principals and teachers already know. That is, that a student’s writing and spelling skills are greatly influenced by a student’s:
- love of reading; and the
- quality of their reading skills.
We know that if a student reads a range of quality books then they will:
- become familiar with a range of words that can improve their spelling; and
- become better writers because the books will sparke their imaginations and assist them organise their thoughts onto the written page so they inform and engage their readers.
The article reported that if children, especially K-6 children, are to develop strong writing and spelling skills and if they are going to continue to develop their reading skills then it is essential that they:
- read regularly at school.
- read regularly at home.
- read a variety of books.
According to NAPLAN results and K-6 school-based results over many years, most Auburn North students develop excellent spelling and writing skills. However, our school’s reading results have not been quite as strong. By assisting all K-6 students further develop their reading skills, our students will become better readers and also become better spellers and writers.
Parents have a very important role in assisting their children develop a love of reading and providing them with the opportunity to read a range of quality books. My parents loved reading themselves and when I was in primary school, which was well before Harry Potter books were written, I especially loved reading the Sherlock Holmes books and any books about sport, especially books about cricket or rugby league.
My parents would regularly take my younger brother and myself to the local council library so we could borrow books we would enjoy reading.
Importantly, the article states that over the past 10 years digital technology has had a major impact on children’s reading, spelling and writing skills. It explains that while the use of some digital technology can assist some students’ literacy skills, too often students in primary school and high school spend far too much time on electronic devices playing games or using social media rather than reading.
I encourage all Auburn North parents to limit the amount of time your children spend using electronic devices and NO students should be allowed to use social media unless they are being supervised by you.
I encourage all Auburn North parents to:
- Act as a model and read yourselves in front of your children.
- Find out what your children are interested in and provide them with the opportunity to read books they will enjoy reading. (eg borrow books from Auburn Library)
- Read with your children.
- Discuss with your children what they are reading at school.
- Limit the amount of time your children spend using electronic devices and that NO students should be allowed to use social media unless they are being supervised by you.
If our staff and parents continue to work harmoniously together to support our students, as I know they will, then I have no doubt our Auburn North students will grow up to have strong reading, writing and spelling skills and be happy, bright and successful adults.
THANK YOU TO OUR OUTSTANDING OFFICE TEAM – Our “Ambassadors of First Impressions”
The people who work in a school’s office are called school administrative support staff (SaSS). Our students, staff, parents, and visitors are so very lucky because I believe that Auburn North has the very best, the most caring, the most efficient, and the most positive SaSS - school office team in New South Wales.
A school’s office team is integral to the smooth operation of a school and one of the main reasons why our school is so well organised is because of the excellent work of our office team.
All members of our school community and our visitors are always greeted in the office by our team’s smiling faces. All members of our office team are outstanding “Ambassadors of First Impressions.”
Last week was “SaSS Week” in all NSW public schools. This week we took the opportunity during one of our K-6 meetings to thank all members of the team who are:
Mrs Acar: | Business Manager and Team Leader |
Mrs Abouraad: | School Administrative Manager |
Mrs Serhan: | School Administrative Officer (SAO) |
Ms Helmy: | School Administrative Officer (SAO) |
Mrs Moujaes: | School Administrative Officer (SAO) |
Mrs Iannitelli: | School Administrative Officer (SAO) |
Ms Kandil: | School Administrative Officer (SAO) |
CONGRATULATIONS MS CORTEJOS
While Ms Cortejos is a permanent classroom teacher at Auburn North, her excellent teaching and leadership knowledge and skills have been acknowledged over a number of years. For the past three years, Ms Cortejos has been a relieving Deputy Principal Instructional Leader in our school but this has only been a temporary position.
Recently, Ms Cortejos successfully applied for a permanent Assistant Principal position in another school. While this is sad news for Auburn North, it is very exciting for Ms Cortjos.
Ms Cortejos leaves our school at the end of this term to start her new role from the beginning of next term. It goes without saying that we will take the opportunity towards the end of this term to formally thank Ms Cortejos for everything she has done for our students, our staff, our parents, and for our school learning community.
CONGRATULATIONS MS CORTEJOS!!

Kindergarten Enrolment 2021
The students in KE have been working very hard in maths lessons this term. We had lots of fun learning about 2D shapes. We learnt about triangles, circles, squares and rectangles. We were all successful in naming, sorting, describing and making 2D shapes.

We used many engaging hands-on resources to demonstrate our learning such as playdough, geoboards, pegboards and blocks. The boys and girls also showed creativity by making a picture of a house, butterfly, flower and train using the 2D shapes we learnt about. Well done KE!
