Dear Parents,
Research shows that three of the main factors in a school that have greatest positive impact on a student’s wellbeing and learning are:
- The school’s leadership.
- The individual teacher.
- The level of parent involvement and parent engagement.
Auburn North has developed and implemented a range of programs in each one of these three areas to assist students achieve outstanding outcomes.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT and PARENT ENGAGEMENT
Research demonstrates that parent involvement and parent engagement are very important to children’s wellbeing and academic success. Research suggests that when parents are involved in their children’s schooling, children tend to be motivated learners, have high educational aspirations, get good grades, and experience a sense of school belonging.
One researcher found that “When parents are involved, children do better in school, and they go to better schools.”.
Parent involvement at Auburn North has an important community and social function. At Auburn North parent involvement includes:
- Parents attending morning assemblies.
- Parents contributing to school evaluations such as our school’s situation analysis last year.
- Parents attending our Harmony House parent wellbeing, health, and social and cultural programs.
Parent engagement has the greatest impact of the two on student learning because it involves parents developing the confidence, knowledge and skills to assist their children’s learning at home. At Auburn North parent engagement includes:
- Parents participating in Harmony House academic programs.
- Parents participating in Kindergarten Orientation programs.
- Parents learning about their children’s learning through the use of technology and apps such as seesaw.
- Parents participating in our ‘Parents as Partners in Learning’ program.
Therefore, involving parents in our school and engaging parents in their learning and in the learning of their children will continue to be major priorities at Auburn North Public School this year.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a number of these excellent parent involvement and parent engagement programs could not take place last year but we are hopeful that will change later this year. However, this year we are able to continue with our very important Three-Way Conferences that we hold twice each year.
Our Auburn North leaders, teachers and I cannot emphasise enough how important it is that parents attend and participate in these conferences with their child and with their child’s teacher. During these conferences teachers, students and parents will work together to set learning goals for students and discuss how the teachers and parents can work hand-in-hand to assist the children achieve the learning goals and achieve great success this year.
Three-Way Conference notes went home earlier this week and we ask that parents return them by next Monday. It is so important that children see and know that their parents are interested in their children’s education and learning so we hope each and every one of our parents participate in a Three-Way Conference during the last week of this term.

KZ Newsletter – Miss Zeidan
KZ have had a fantastic start to their first year at school and have already achieved so many goals!
Friendship
KZ have settled really well with routines and learning activities. We have made many friends and like to play together on the playground. We always use kind words to our friends and play safely.

Mathematics
This term, KZ have been learning about numerals in the range of 1-12. We have been learning to count, make and write these numbers. We showed success when representing numbers in different ways. Some of these ways included using drawings, concrete materials and writing the number on a paper chain.

Writing
During writing, we have been learning how to write words in a sentence. We have been using our writing mats to help us find letters and high frequency words. KZ have also been learning strategies to help them spell a word, for example, stretching the word and listening for parts in a word.
Technology Skills
KZ enjoy Monday technology time with Mr. Prendergast in the ANTEC and ANCLIC. We have been learning how to use a mouse and a keyboard. KZ have shown character during all lessons.

2N have had a fabulous start to the year! We have loved being on the other side of the school, playing on the big oval and making new friends. We have been learning about lots of different and exciting things too!
In literacy, we have been writing information texts on different animals such as lions, giraffes, elephants and rhinos. Very excitingly, we went on an excursion to Sydney Zoo and we saw all of these animals in real life! We even saw crocodiles, sharks, snakes and meerkats. We had such a fun day with our teachers and friends.
This year, we started a new ANCLIC/ANTEC program with Mr P and we have been learning so many new technological skills. We have learnt to create a PowerPoint and add pictures and information to it that is all about us. We can’t wait to learn more and to see our finished product at the end!

This year one of the goals at ANPS is to become more sustainable. One way we are doing this is through improving our waste management practices. Students are now disposing of rubbish at school in 3 different bins - landfill (red), recycling (yellow) and organics (green). Our red landfill bins contain a lot of single-use plastic items that could be reduced by sending food in reusable containers.
Can you make a swap with one or more items in your child's lunch box to reduce waste?

- Swap plastic wrap for reusable containers.
- Swap plastic cultery for reusable cutlery.
- Swap zip-lock bags for reusable containers.
Congratulations to the 16 students from year 6 who were selected to be Sports Captains and Vice Captains for 2021. Their job is to motivate and organise students in their houses to cheer loudly and try their best at all sporting events. Our first sports event this year will be our cross country, which will be held in Term 2. When carnivals are held, students are encouraged to wear the colour of their house team.
