Dear Parents,
I would like to congratulate all students, all staff, and all parents on working together so effectively to ensure that this term has been so successful for all members of the Auburn North FAMILY. I believe this term has laid the ground work for what will prove to be our school’s most successful year in the past 22 years.
Early indicators of a highly successful 2021 school year include:
- Inspirational and innovative leadership and teaching taking place in every classroom and every learning space every school day since the beginning of this school year.
- Motivated and engaged students trying very hard every single day to achieve their learning goals and to live and breathe our school’s values of honesty, kindness, respect, fairness, friendship, and responsibility so that they SHINE BRIGHT this year.
- Commencing our new and exciting four-year school plan where we have planned and where we expect to achieve outstanding outcomes in the areas of student and staff wellbeing, leadership, teaching, student learning, and parent involvement and parent engagement.
OUR THREE-WAY CONFERENCES
Many schools have parent-teacher meetings twice a year however, at Auburn North in our school context we have always believed that it is absolutely essential that students attend and participate in meetings when teachers and parents meet to discuss student development, student achievement, and areas for future development.
We believe that it is very important for students to attend and participate in conferences for a number of reasons including:
- Students see and learn that their teachers and parents have developed trusting and mutually respectful relationships.
- Students see and learn that their teachers and parents are working together in partnership to assist students become the very best young people they can become.
- Students have a “voice” regarding their learning and are able to reflect on their learning and on areas they would like to continue improving.
- Students, teachers and parents develop a shared understanding of the students as young people and not just as learners.
- Each team of student, teacher and parent can work hand-in-hand to assist each student achieve each of their 2021 goals and so each student can shine brightly in 2021.
This week it was wonderful to see these teams of students, parents and teachers talking with each other and working with each other in perfect harmony for the benefit of all of our parents, teachers and, most importantly, our STUDENTS.
OUR SCHOOL HALL TRANSFORMATION – “AUBURN NORTH COMMUNITY HUB”
In 2020 our school successfully applied for a $20,000 LSCF grant to update our school hall. We wanted to transform the hall into the ‘Auburn North Community Hub’ so community groups could use it after school and on weekends.
We have now used these funds along with funds from another community grant that we had successfully applied for to improve the hall. These combined grants were used to carry out internal painting, window upgrades, and new stage flooring.
In the future we hope to purchase new storage units and chairs for the hall/community hub and for the installation of a new sound system.
COVID-19 has been a major obstacle to allowing us to make our community hub available to community groups for them to organise community programs. While our students continue to use the hall we are hoping that as COVID-19 restrictions ease, community groups will be able to use THEIR Auburn North Community Hub for programs such as parent fitness and dance classes, Schools as Community Centres programs, Saturday Community Language School assemblies, and 'Parents as Partners in Learning' workshops.

What a fantastic first term it is has been for 3M!
Literacy
In literacy, students have been following the writing process to shape their amazing imaginations into narratives. We have learned various techniques to make stories exciting such as using onomatopoeia, using speech effectively and adding adjectives and adverbs. After each narrative, students also use a checklist to assess their own learning. We are very proud of our creative stories!
Numeracy
In numeracy, students have been learning about patterns. We were actively engaged in creating and continuing a variety of number patterns. We were also successful in describing the relationship between patterns, addition and subtraction using the maths language ‘increasing’ and ‘decreasing.’
Science
In science, we have been learning about the Earth’s surface and how it changes over time. Students have been examining how humans can cause erosion. 3M investigated the school to identify different types of erosion. We found lots of worn areas caused by footsteps!

Auburn North – the new home of Eco-Warriors and Worm Farms
Did you know that over 40% of rubbish that goes into landfill is food waste?
Did you know that food waste rotting inside plastic bags in landfill creates potent methane gas that is 26x more powerful as a greenhouse gas than the carbon dioxide from cars?

Basically, food waste is making our planet HOTTER! So to help tackle climate change and plastic pollution, ANPS has made some wonderful changes this term to help reduce our school’s impact on climate change. Our playgrounds now have THREE BINS – green for food waste and organics (such as fruit and vege peels, apple cores, bread and rice scraps, etc), yellow for recyclable items (eg. plastic bottles, yoghurt cups, aluminium foil, etc) and red for non-recyclables and landfill items (eg. soft plastics, plastic cutlery, etc).
Some of our students have signed up to become ECO-WARRIORS who help their friends put their rubbish in the correct bin at lunchtime. The contents of our green bins now DO NOT GO INTO LANDFILL. They are composted in 8 “Subpods”, which are worm farms located in our school gardens which will turn our food waste into new soil instead of greenhouse gases.
We are so proud of becoming a more sustainable school. Thank you Mr Don for doing all the digging to install our 8 new Subpods! And thank you to all of our Eco-Warriors for helping our school community to save the planet!
Families can have an impact at home too by making some important changes:
- Recycle all of your soft plastic packaging (plastic bags, bread bags, frozen food bags, cling wrap, zip lock bags, any soft plastic that can be scrunched in the soft plastic recycle bins at your local Coles and Woolworths (ask in store to find out where they are).
- You could also get a compost bin for your backyard or unit block to compost your food waste at home and turn it into new soil instead of it creating deadly greenhouse gases in landfill.
- Aim for WASTE FREE SCHOOL LUNCHES by avoiding plastic wrap. Put your school food in washable containers that can be brought home and used again the next day. Then you will have NOTHING to put in the bin.
Well done, Auburn North!
Sustainability Team,
