Dear Parents,
As you know, Auburn North Public School was selected by the NSW Department of Education to be one its first three Ambassador Schools. A journalist in a recent newspaper article wrote that Auburn North and the two other schools had been selected because of their outstanding literacy and numeracy outcomes and their high level of student attendance. Ms Sarah Mitchell, the NSW Education Minister was quoted as saying, “That’s what made them stand out.”
The article explained that the NSW Department of Education will commission university researchers to identify the secrets behind the schools’ success. Ms Mitchell is quoted as saying that some of the secrets may be identified by finding answers to the following questions:
- Is it the leadership?
- Is it collaborative practice between staff?
- Is it the strong connection to the community?
We believe there are a number of interrelated factors that have contributed to the development of our high-performing, successful school. These factors certainly do include:
- Our school’s leadership.
- The collaborative practices between staff.
- Our school’s strong connection to our community of families.
To ensure our school’s teaching practices are world-class and to ensure our students achieve the best-possible education in all subject areas, all of our school’s programs, practices and strategies are based on what worldwide research and evidence shows are the most effective and successful teaching and learning programs, practices and strategies.
Research and other evidence clearly demonstrate the four factors in a school that have the greatest impact on student learning are:
- The quality and depth of the school’s leadership.
- The quality of the individual teacher.
- The level of collaboration between teachers and to what extent all teachers in a school believe all students are capable of achieving anything and everything. (Collective teacher efficacy)
- The school’s strong connection to its families and the level of parent involvement and engagement.
Over many years Auburn North has allocated large amounts of financial resources, human resources, and physical resources to the four areas listed above to ensure our students achieve outstanding learning outcomes.
Leadership
In the area of leadership, I’m not aware of any school that has a more outstanding leadership team than Auburn North. Our school’s executive leaders are:
- Mrs Southgate
- Mrs Clift
- Mrs Acar
- Mrs Tukuafu
- Ms Mirzai
- Mrs Strong
- Ms Wallace
- Mrs McIntyre (previously Ms Goicoechea before she was recently married. Congratulations Mrs McIntyre)
- Ms Bou-Rizk
Our grade leaders are:
- Mrs Picken
- Ms Woodward
- Ms Lynch
- Ms Whitaker
- Ms Rahimy
- Ms Harvey-Latham
- Ms Hamm
- Ms Edwards
As well, Ms Gerdes is the leader of our K-6 technology programs.
These leaders participate in leadership development programs to ensure they continue to develop their leadership knowledge, skills and abilities to maximise student learning outcomes.
Individual Teachers
The members of the executive team have developed and implemented in the past and will continue to develop and implement excellent professional learning programs and strategies for our teachers so that each one of our individual teachers becomes the very best teacher they can become. These programs and strategies include:
- Providing demonstration lessons for teachers.
- Team-teaching lessons with teachers.
- Lesson observations and provision of feedback to teachers.
- One-on-one coaching and mentoring sessions.
- Weekly Interactive professional learning workshops.
Collaboration Between Teachers
To achieve a high level of collaboration between teachers our executive leaders and grade leaders have developed and implemented a range of practices and strategies. These include teachers:
- Working together to develop school and grade goals.
- Collaboratively developing teaching programs and lessons.
- Observing each other teach and providing feedback.
- Working together during professional learning programs.
- Analysing class and grade student learning data in small groups to collaboratively develop future programs and lessons.
School’s Connection to Its Families and Parent Involvement and Parent Engagement
Our school has developed a reputation as a community-based school that has enabled our parents and teachers to develop trusting and mutually respectful relationships, and a school that has assisted parents develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to become actively engaged in their children’s learning.
A number of programs and strategies have contributed to the development of our community-based and community-rich school learning community. They include:
- Parent – teacher meetings.
- Three-way conferences.
- Use of the Seasaw app where teachers communicate regularly with parents about their children’s learning, providing parents with a “window” into their children’s learning.
- Our award-winning ‘Parents as Partners in Learning’ workshops which we hope will resume next term.
These are just some of the reasons that explain our school’s success. We look forward to working with universities to identify other factors that have led to us becoming an Ambassador School, and we hope to share these features with other NSW schools.

Literacy
This term, 2TI have been writing information texts about different countries around the world. So far, they have ‘visited’ Spain, Japan and Egypt. They have all been very excited to learn interesting but important facts about these countries and have been demonstrating success by putting these facts into their own sentences to form paragraphs that include a topic sentence and extra information. Students have even created their own passports that holds proof of all the different countries that they have ‘visited’!
Numeracy
In maths, 2TI have been learning about 2D space. They have learnt to demonstrate a flip and slide, as well as create their own design using 2D shapes over a line of symmetry! Students also engage in whole number lessons, number talks and number sense activities each week to consolidate their understanding in numeracy as well as addition and subtraction mental strategies.

In science, students have been learning about the importance of Earth’s natural resources such as soil and water. They have also had the opportunity to grow their own beans using a plastic cup, soil and bean seeds! 2TI have been very excited to look after their beans and make observations of their beans on a daily basis.
