Dear Parents,
As I visit classrooms, it is very clear that outstanding teaching and learning is continuing in every classroom all day, every day and that this will be the case until the end of the school year.
2021 NSW DEPARTMENT of EDUCATION’S SECRETARY’S SCHOOL AWARDS
Each year a small number of NSW primary schools and high schools are selected to receive prestigious NSW Department of Education’s SECRETARY’S SCHOOL AWARDS. There are two categories of awards. They are the:
- Secretary’s Award for Outstanding School Initiative.
- Secretary’s Award for School Achievement.
I am very proud to inform you that Auburn North Public School was selected to receive BOTH awards. In fact, we were the ONLY school in NSW to receive both awards.
Our 2021 Secretary’s Award for Outstanding School Initiative recognised our school’s ‘Use of Video for Self-Reflection and Peer-Reflection to Improve Leadership, Teaching, and Learning Outcomes’ initiative. This initiative involved teachers and leaders reflecting on videos of themselves teaching, participating in one-on-one coaching and mentoring sessions, and grade meetings where teachers analysed and discussed learning data and developing future programs.
Our 2021 Secretary’s Award for School Achievement recognised our ‘school’s collaborative school culture’, which has promoted leader and teacher collaboration to significantly improve leadership and teaching practices to improve student learning outcomes.
I hope you feel very proud to be important members of the outstanding Auburn North Public School Learning Community.

NEW SCHOOL CURRICULUM – English and Maths
You may have read or heard that the NSW Department of Education has developed new English and Maths syllabuses. They are part of a significant curriculum reform that aims to de-clutter the curriculum and place attention on building strong foundations in Literacy and Numeracy. By 2024, all schools in NSW will implement the new K-6 English and Mathematics syllabuses.
The timeline for their implantation is outlined below:
2022 – NSW schools will familiarise themselves with the K-2 English and Maths syllabuses. Accelerated Adopter schools, including Auburn North Public School, will implement the new syllabuses in Year 1 and will provide feedback to the NSW Department of Education on the support materials and professional learning provided.
2023 – All NSW schools will implement the K-2 English and Mathematics syllabuses. NSW schools will begin familiarisation with the Years 3-6 syllabuses.
2024 – All NSW schools will implement the Years 3-6 syllabuses.
Features of the new syllabuses include:
- The K-2 English and Mathematics syllabuses focus on providing every child with solid foundations in the basic skills. The new syllabus documents make very clear the essential knowledge and skills students need to develop during each stage of learning.
- Priority learning will focus on developing oral language, early reading and writing skills, and early mathematics knowledge and skills.
- The new syllabuses have removed extraneous teaching content that has proven unnecessary for students to develop, to increase the time teachers are able to spend assisting their students in developing essential skills.
- The new syllabuses include evidence-based teaching advice, in line with current research to support teachers to identify and respond to students’ development and learning needs.
Auburn North leaders and teachers have been strategically preparing for the new syllabuses. An example has been in Reading. Ms Mirzai, Mrs McIntyre, Mrs Bou-Rizk, and Ms Wallace developed and have implemented an excellent program of 12 teacher professional learning workshops for all K-6 Auburn North teachers this year. The workshops focused on Effective Reading Instruction.
The aim of the training program was to assist Auburn North teachers further develop their knowledge and understanding of research and evidence-based effective reading instruction to further improve reading outcomes for all K-6 students.
Teachers actively engaged in up-to-date professional readings and high-quality collegial discussions in the areas of oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. They received masterclasses in new terminology from Instructional Leaders.
Teachers improved their knowledge of explicit, instructional routines to support reading development, high-quality resources to support planning and programming, and assessment strategies to assist in determining student achievement and ‘where to next’. All workshops were recorded so teachers could review the learning.
This professional learning program along with other English and maths professional learning programs this year have significantly improved our teachers’ knowledge and skills to be able to effectively implement the new English and maths syllabuses.
AUBURN NORTH SELECTED AS ‘ACCELERATED ADOPTER’ SCHOOL
As well as the two Secretary’s awards, our school’s excellence has been recognised this year by the NSW Department of Education in a different way. The Department has selected Auburn North as an ‘Accelerated Adopter’ to implement the new syllabuses for Year 1 in 2022. This is great news for our teachers and students.
The Department is developing a comprehensive suite of resources and professional learning to support implementation and as an Accelerated Adopter school, our school will play an important role in co-designing and testing support resources.
As an Accelerated Adopter school, we will:
- Implement the new syllabuses for your Year 1 cohort in 2022.
- Co-design models of support by providing invaluable real-time feedback and advice to the Department on implementation materials and supports.
- Share our experience and expertise, shaping the path for reform for teachers and students right across the state.
- Influence how the Department evaluates curriculum reform implementation and support resources for the rest of the reform.
WE REQUEST YOUR ASSISTANCE

In 1H, we aim to embody the ANPS values and the 6Cs of learning every day. Here are some insights into our learning as we prepare for the demands of Year 2!
In technology we showed friendship and kindness by peer tutoring each other as we learnt to use Microsoft PowerPoint. We added slides, inputted information, and cross-referenced with our planning sheet.
We demonstrated respect and citizenship on Remembrance Day by observing a minute's silence, wearing a poppy and learnt about those who have defended our country for our freedom.
During literacy rotations, we displayed honesty by collaboratively playing spelling games such as Boggle and recording our points.
In maths groups, we were responsible when we stayed on task during independent practice. The Place Value Game was a crowd favourite amongst the Astronaut's group as it sparked our critical thinking.
Finally, during sport, we exhibited fairness by sharing the ball amongst our team members during a game of chest pass Poison Ball. We discovered the importance of communication in Sport to draw attention and to make a successful pass.
I am so proud of how 1H has shown character and resilience this year. We are ready for you, Year 2, 2022!

Class Report 3VC
It has been an absolute delight to see all the students reunited with their peers and teachers after a term of home learning. All students have made a positive transition since returning to learning in the classroom and are back into routine and actively engaged in their learning.
Literacy
We have read some great quality texts with rich vocabulary this term and have incorporated these texts into our reading and writing tasks. Students have had the opportunity to respond to texts by identifying and discussing aspects of texts that relate to their own experience. They have been able to successfully make text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world connections.
In writing, students have used the rich vocabulary from the texts that we have been reading as a class to inspire them to write their own narratives. It has been great to see students use the correct text structure and confidently be able to use and include a range of features such as similes, imagery, and alliteration in their writing.
Numeracy
In numeracy this week, we have been learning about three-dimensional objects. The students had the opportunity to name, make, compare and sketch a variety of three-dimensional objects. All students have been successful at describing the features of prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres. Students were able to describe the faces, edges, and vertices on a range of three-dimensional objects.
I am very proud of the all the students in 3VC.
Have a look at some of the activities and learning that have been happening in the 3VC classroom.

This term, KA have been learning about living things in Science. We’ve been following the ‘working scientifically cycle’ to conduct an investigation on plant growth under different conditions. We first started to make prediction, then planned and after that, investigated and analysed the data daily.
Once we planted our own seeds, we made sure to take care of it to ensure they live and grow. We watered it each day and made sure they had sunlight. We then observed our plants to see the changes that occur, took photos, and recorded our observations to document the growth of their plant over time on Book Creator Application.
