Dear Parents,
OUR SCHOOL IS A NSW AMBASSADOR SCHOOL
I would like to share some very special information with the parents of the children who started at Auburn North this year, including the parents of our Kindergarten children who have begun their formal school so successfully this term.
From more than 2,200 New South Wales (NSW) public primary schools and high schools, last year our school was selected by the NSW Department of Education (DoE) as one of only 10 schools to be selected as a NSW AMBASSADOR SCHOOL.
In a statement last year, the NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said Ambassador Schools exemplified the excellent educational outcomes the NSW Government sought to deliver for all students. The Minister said:
"Ambassador Schools have proven, through their results, that the practices they are using make a huge difference for their students. What these schools are doing is effective, and this program will capture their methods to drive high performance in other schools across the state."
As I wrote last year, we should ALL feel immense pride in being acknowledged by the DoE for our excellent achievements in the areas of Leadership, Teaching, Learning, and Parent Engagement over many years.
Ambassador Schools were selected for a variety of reasons including achieving outstanding NAPLAN results over many years. While we are very proud of our NAPLAN results, please understand that while we consider NAPLAN tests for year 3 and year 5 students and the data they show about our school and individual students are important, we consider the student learning data our Kindergarten to year 6 teachers collect and analyse every day to develop future high quality teaching and learning programs even more important.
The Ambassador School Program will operate for the next three years. During that time, we will have the opportunity to:
• Learn with and from other high-performing schools so that we continue to become an even better school for our students, school leaders, teachers, and parents; and
• Partner with universities through two research centres, one in Sydney and one in regional NSW, to generate education research that can be shared across our system and around the world to assist schools become even more successful.
Earlier this week I attended a meeting along with the principals of the nine other Ambassador schools, along with DoE senior officers who are coordinating the program and with the university researchers from three different universities.
During the meeting principals received a great deal of information about the program and were asked to outline what they would like their schools to gain from their participation in the program. I will share this information with you next term.
Also during the meeting, each principal was asked to discuss a number of topics including:
• What are you most proud of as the principal of your school?
• What is meant by ‘school success’?
• What do you think makes a ‘successful school’?
On behalf of our staff, students, and parents I very proudly responded to each question.
2022 SCHOOL SAYING and STUDENT DREAMS and GOALS
As you know our 2022 school saying is:
‘It’s 2022, and we know what to do.
Work hard, be kind, and make our dreams come true.’
In the second edition of our school newsletter this term, I explained that our teachers will motivate and encourage our students to work hard and be kind, and that they will assist their students achieve their school dreams or goals.
Parents may like to speak with their children about their school dreams or goals and discuss how the children can achieve their school dreams or goals.
One of our year 5 students has decided her dreams/goals are:
• To be a good friend.
• To play nicely.
• To follow the school values.
• To be responsible.
• To love all teachers.
• To shine as bright as I can.
• To earn bronze, silver, and gold certificates.
• To earn a principal’s morning tea.
• To be selected to receive a gold badge.
‘PARENTS AS PARTNERS IN LEARNING’ Program
Our outstanding ‘Parents as Partners in Learning’ program has finally resumed. During terms two and three there will be workshops for parents who have students in all K-6 grades. These workshops will assist you further develop the confidence, knowledge, and skills to be active participants in your children’s learning.
Yesterday morning a very large number of parents of K-2 students learned about our new K-2 evidence-based approach to reading. During this workshop, our leaders and teachers explained the changes we have made to assist students develop excellent reading skills. Parents were also shown some of the phonics and decodable resources our school has purchased.
Parents also became familiar with the DRA Online Library and learned that this will start for homework from the beginning of next term.
I would like to thank Ms Woodward, Mrs Picken, and Ms Mirzai for organising this workshop.
NOWRUZ MUBARAK
I would like to take this opportunity to wish many of you a very happy Nowruz. Nowruz—which means “New Day”— is a holiday marking the arrival of spring and the first day of the year. It is a holiday that is celebrated by people not only in Afghanistan but also in Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and other communities elsewhere in the world. I hope those who are celebrating have a year filled with happiness and prosperity.
