Dear Parents,
Last Tuesday a NSW Department of Education film crew and senior executives from the Department spent the whole day in our school. This was part of the Department’s ‘School Success Model’ initiative and the Ambassador School program.
The purpose of the visit was to film various aspects of our school that may partially explain why our school is a high-performing school and why Auburn North was selected as one of the Department’s 10 Ambassador schools.
They interviewed some members of staff who explained why they thought Auburn North was a successful school for students, leaders, and teachers. They also interviewed one parent who outlined how our school assists parents become and remain informed participants in their children’s learning.
The crew spent a good deal of time filming lessons “in action”, trying to capture the outstanding teaching and learning that takes place in every Auburn North classroom every single day.
The crew will eventually produce a four-minute video that will be uploaded onto the Department’s website and we will be sent a longer video to our school to share with all members of the Auburn North Family.
2022 NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME
On Wednesday 26th of May, Auburn North Public School joined schools around Australia to celebrate ‘National Simultaneous Storytime’.
‘National Simultaneous Storytime’ is an annual event where children across the country read the same story at the same time.
This year’s story was ‘Family Tree’ by Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh. It’s a lovely story that uses a tree as a metaphor for the growth of a little girl, alongside her family and community. ‘Family Tree’ encourages children to reflect on their own family and community, and how those parts of their lives will grow and change as they age.
As members of their own Auburn North family, our students immersed themselves in the heart-warming story and detailed illustrations.
Our 2022 ‘National Simultaneous Storytime’ program really was a celebration of our whole school community, as conversations blossomed and stories were shared by both students and teachers about their families, connections, and special places.
Together with their class or grade groups, students enjoyed art, craft, and game activities that were inspired by the story and its themes. This included building family trees, designing cockatoo collage art, and drawing visual summaries of their lives.
I would like to thank the following teachers for organising this very special and memorable program:
- Ms Wilkins
- Ms Wang
- Ms Saidi
- Ms Ng
- Ms Mao

NEW SCHOOL MASCOT
Thanks to Mrs Southgate, last week we introduced our students to our new school mascot. Our new mascot is a meerkat!
We hope our school mascot will further inspire all Auburn North students, staff, and parents to work hard, be kind, and make their dreams come true.
Naturally, our new school mascot needs a name and all classes have been thinking about some possible names.
We will consider all suggested names and Mrs Southgate will announce our school mascot's name in the next few weeks.

2C have worked so hard this term and strive to achieve the learning goal of every lesson. Students have developed kind and positive relationships with all boys and girls in Year 2.
Literacy
During writing last term, Year 2 students wrote information reports about different jungle animals. Students developed their skills in using headings and sub-headings to structure their writing, topic sentences and a variety of punctuation, including exclamation marks and question marks. In week 3 of this term, Year 2 were lucky enough to go on an excursion to Sydney Zoo and see so many of the animals that we learnt about last term. 2C had a fantastic day at the zoo with their friends! Some of our favourite animals were the crocodile, bull shark and orangutans! All Year 2 students showed the Auburn North School values throughout the day, in particular respect and responsibility.
Numeracy
This term in numeracy, 2C have been developing their critical thinking and collaboration skills. Earlier this term, students were learning to represent, describe and explore 2D shapes and created their own designs with line symmetry. All 2C students were so creative and had so much fun during this lesson. Over the last two weeks, 2C have been learning to add and subtract two-digit numbers together using the jump strategy. Students have challenged themselves and continue to persevere while learning a new strategy.

ZOO EXCURSION

6V certainly have demonstrated an enthusiastic approach to learning in the spirit of our school saying, ‘It’s 2022, and we know what to do, work hard, be kind, and make our dreams come true’. Writing, particularly, has been a highlight in Term 1, as students researched, collated information, and wrote informative texts about natural disasters.
This term, Year 6 will engage in a novel study, responding to the text, ‘Matilda’, and writing a book review. All students have enjoyed engaging, hands-on tasks during maths lessons, such as using play dough to compare fractions and demonstrating displacement to measure volume.
6V have investigated and identified different types of forces, such as gravity, friction and air resistance in science lessons this semester. They have explored the history focus of how Australian society changed throughout the twentieth century and can explain the roles and responsibilities of each level of government.
All students have looked forward to sport on Fridays and are thrilled that PSSA is commencing in Term 2. They enjoyed participating in ‘Crazy Sock and Hair Day’. 6V students are a determined and collaborative class that are excited about all the things they will achieve this year.
