Dear Parents,
Our K-6 students are so talented in so many different areas and they demonstrate these talents to you and their teachers every single day. Recently, every one of our Year 6 students demonstrated their talents in Writing.
The students participated in a school-based writing competition that was inspired by an annual writing competition that is coordinated by the Whitlam Institute. The institute is named after Gough Whitlam, a former Australian prime minister.
The “What Matters” competition is inspired by Gough Whitlam's commitment to involving young people in the shaping of Australia's future. Responding to the simple question “What matters?”, entrants are free to express their views on any matter or issue they care about.
The excellent entries from all year 6 students reminded us just how passionate, observant, and articulate they are and how deeply motivated they are by a sense of social justice as they offered their teachers and peers a window into not just what concerns them, but what inspires them.
They covered topics such as the importance of education and family, racism, climate change, and social media.
From all the outstanding entries, three students were selected to receive book prizes. The three students received a copy of the book ‘Kids Who Did’ which is a collection of stories about children throughout history who stood up for what they believed in and who made a real difference in the lives of other people.
The three students were Shaylee Gurung, Raabia Moin, and Milad Nazari.
Please find below some extracts from these student’s entries.

“As white as the moon or as dark as the earth.
No matter what gender you are, we are all the same and served to have equal rights.”
“As we are the role models for the next generations,
It is in our hands to stop discrimination around the world.”
“I think that world peace is important to me because it can have a massive impact on today’s society. It’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
“Our culture, religion of skin colour should not divide us but unite us."
KINDERGARTEN 'PARENTS AS PARTNERS IN LEARNING' WORKSHOP
On Tuesday 7th June, our Kindergarten leaders held the second ‘Parents as Partners in Learning’ session. The theme of the session was 'Read to Succeed'.
During this session, parents learnt a variety of strategies to enable them to support their children when their children are reading at home.
Parents were introduced to the Decodable Readers Online Library, a digital platform that K-2 classes are utilising this year in the classroom and as home readers. Parents were supported in navigating the online library and were introduced to some of the additional features of the program such as support videos and games that children can access from home as well as at school.
So reading is fun, enjoyable, and successful at home for parents and children, the Kindergarten leaders walked parents through a variety of scenarios that they might experience when reading with their child and provided parents with specific strategies to support their child.
During this session, the students of the parents who attended the session joined their parents in ANCLIC, further strengthening the partnership between students, parents and teachers.
Some comments made by some parents during or after the session included:
“I was unaware of all the features of the online library and I’m so excited now to use these with my child.”
“My child loves to read at home and always wants to do more and I now feel more confident to be able to help him at home.”
Other parents explained that they greatly valued these sessions and felt that they were gaining knowledge from them, that these sessions were assisting them further develop their English, and their children were coming home and accessing different areas from the online library as they had explored it in their classrooms.
The session was recorded and sent to families via Seesaw so all parents could access this outstanding learning experience.
I would Like to thank Ms Angury, Ms Zeidan, and Mrs Picken for coordinating this very successful parent workshop.
CONGRATULATIONS MS LASCALA – MRS VOLPATO
Ms Lascala recently got married and has just returned from her honeymoon. We would like to congratulate Mrs and Mr Volpato, and we wish them all the happiness in the world.

Literacy:
5W have begun our first ever novel study on the book Wonder. After spending last term learning how to ‘show, don’t tell’ while writing narratives, we are now learning to interpret what an author is trying to ‘show, don’t tell’! Our whole class has been very engaged in the novel study and 5W students can often be heard asking to spend more time reading Wonder. 5W are applying their learning from K-4 and demonstrating their critical thinking and analysis skills.

Numeracy:
We are working hard towards our mathematics targets this term! This term we are learning some new skills which are challenging, yet achievable. To practice our new skills, we are playing lots of games. The class’ favourite game is Beat the Teacher, and they nearly always do!
In addition to our targets, we have enjoyed using our critical thinking skills to use directional language. 5W students are now able to give accurate and easy to follow directions. They have worked together to find the most effective way through the familiar streets of Auburn and Parramatta using maps.

History:
We have been studying the Gold Rush in history, and our students love imagining what life on the gold fields were like! 5W are using historical skills, including research and source analysis to learn more about everyday life and immigration on the gold field. We have some future historians in our classroom. 5W always ask interesting and deep questions about this period of history, demonstrating a deep level of engagement and thinking.

Numeracy
In maths, 1KL have been learning about position. They have been learning about right, left , forwards and backwards. They were really excited to use the blue bots in small groups. They had to write down the directions using the arrows first and then they checked it with their blue bots.
Literacy
Students have been learning phonics and reading during the morning sessions. They enjoy going to their different literacy groups and engaging in various literacy activities. They have been practising the phonics they have learnt that week during their literacy rotations and supported reading.

In Year 3 in Literacy, we have been writing information reports on dinosaurs. We have found it fascinating to learn about the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and the dinosaurs that lived during these times. Did you know that some descendants of dinosaurs are still alive today? Birds are the closest living relative to all extinct dinosaurs!
In Numeracy, 3CD have been using their mathematical brains in a different capacity this term. We have been learning about 3D objects, angles and measurement and have really enjoyed these practical lessons. We have modelled 3D objects from matchsticks and playdough, measured various lengths inside and outside the classroom and have learned all about acute, obtuse and right angles.
It has been an exciting time in 3CD this term in other learning areas also. We have enjoyed conducting science experiments, learning about our local community and singing ‘Count on Me’ by Bruno Mars, together with the rest of our Year 3 peers.
