Dear Parents,
Last month I read a newspaper article where the journalist wrote about the benefits of explicit teaching or direct-instruction teaching compared to what can be called student-directed or inquiry-based learning.
Explicit or direct-instruction teaching involves teachers giving step-by-step instructions and explanations for students to practise, and to verify that all students have mastered content before moving to the next stage or lesson.
Inquiry-based learning on the other hand gives students a great deal of autonomy and responsibility in deciding what and how to learn.
At Auburn North, students at times do have the opportunity to take responsibility for their learning but explicit teaching has always been the focus and priority at Auburn North and will continue to be in the future.
Research and other evidence clearly show that explicit teaching has a profound positive impact on student learning. That is why we developed our own school’s explicit teaching model in 2016.
We call our explicit teaching model the Instructional Model or the IM. Our teachers have participated in and continue to participate in high-impact teacher professional learning programs to enable them to develop excellent skills in programming and teaching using our IM.
The IM is used by all Auburn North teachers in nearly all literacy and numeracy programs and lessons and it has assisted our students achieve excellent learning outcomes.
Our explicit teaching model is assisting our K-6 students develop outstanding literacy and numeracy skills, technology skills, and 21st century skills such as critical and creative thinking skills.
We want and have planned for all our students to have developed this skill set by the time they graduate from year 6 so they are ready to succeed from their first day in high school.

Kindergarten Parents and Partners
On Wednesday 26th October, Kindergarten leaders held the final Parents as Partners in Learning workshop for Kindergarten families to attend with their children. The session had a focus on numeracy, specifically counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
During the session, parents learnt about the 2022 Kindergarten Mathematics Targets and how these skills are taught and developed at school.
So mathematics is fun, enjoyable and successful at home, parents were provided with some resources and practical activities to complete at home to support their child’s mathematics development.
During the session, the students of the parents who attended the session joined their parents in the ANLIC, further strengthening the partnership between students, parents and teachers. The students were able to demonstrate how much they have learnt this year.
The session was recorded and sent to families via Seesaw, with a resource pack, so that all parents could access this learning experience.

Kindergarten Excursion – Golden Ridge Farm
On Monday 31st October, Kindergarten students and teachers visited Golden Ridge Farm for their very first excursion. With much excitement, the students boarded the bus and cheered as they approached the farm.
At the farm, students met Farmer Shey, Farmer Maddi and Farmer Belle. Students learnt about the different animals that live at the farm and how to take care of them.
Throughout the day, students had a tour of the farm and bravely fed the sheep, goats and alpacas some food. After the tour, the students got to milk Betty the cow and learnt about all the food milk is used to make, including ice-cream, yoghurt and butter. Students finished the day by bottle feeding the baby goats and holding a baby chick, duckling, rabbit and hamster.
The boys and girls in Kindergarten had a wonderful day at the farm with memories that will last a lifetime.
This year, our wonderful Eco Warrior recycling and composting programs continue, helping to make ANPS a super sustainable school. Students are getting better at sorting their rubbish into landfill (red bin), comingled recycling (yellow bin) and organics (food and paper – green bin). All organic waste collected in the green bins is fed to our pet worms who live in our Subpod worm farms (pictured below). Our hungry pet worms eat all of these food scraps, turning them into rich, new soil to fertilise our beautiful school gardens. Thank you to our wonderful years 3-6 students on the Eco Warrior team who volunteer their time to feed our hungry worms every week. This stops huge amounts of food waste from going into landfill which produces dangerous greenhouses gasses that are warming our planet and changing our climate for the worse.
Did you know that food waste rotting in landfill makes a harmful greenhouse gas called methane, which is 25 times WORSE for the planet than carbon dioxide from cars?! Composting your food waste is an extremely effective way to fight global warming and climate change.
You can do your bit for your children’s future at home by collecting your family’s food waste in a compost bin to fertilise your garden. Let’s all do our bit to help our planet!
