Dear Parents/Carers,
While I have not watched the television program, I have seen advertisements for a television program that is reported to be a trailblazing, television-first original experiment and series that follows what happens when some Australian students and families from very different cultures, religions and backgrounds who attend different types of schools learn about each other’s worlds when they participate in a school swap.
According to information about the program, the purpose of the school swap is to see if it can assist build greater acceptance, respect and understanding between diverse cultural communities.
Rather than just a few weeks like the students in the television program, I believe our Auburn North students enjoy these experiences every single minute of every single day they attend Auburn North.
All members of the Auburn North FAMILY (i.e students, staff, parents) are very proud that our school is one of the most multicultural schools in Australia, probably the world. Our students and their families come from more than 60 different countries and speak more than 40 different languages.
Our school really is the United Nations.
From 2000 – 2016 our school's Theme was Auburn North Public School was the school that provided ‘The Best of All Worlds'. This theme reflected the fact that our school was blessed with a rich tapestry of cultures from around the world, where every day we respected each other and celebrated our own and each other's cultures.
This theme also reflected the fact that all members of our learning community believed our learning community was multiculturalism at its very best and most successful.
We believed only in an inclusive multicultural public school like Auburn North Public School could students learn one of life's most important lessons. That lesson was regardless of a person's culture, religion, colour, or first language, we were all essentially the same. We all wanted to live safe, peaceful, happy, healthy, and successful lives.
Our Auburn North students learned this lesson naturally every single moment of every single school day as they learned and played with other children from all around the world.
Over the past 23 years I have had the enormous pleasure of watching a whole generation of young people grow up learning and living this lesson and go on to become very happy, healthy, and successful adults.
I also believe Auburn North staff and parents have learned this lesson as members of our very special multicultural school family.
In 2016 our learning community decided to expand our Theme to “The Best of All Worlds for 21st Century Learners”. This acknowledged that while it was very important for Auburn North students to continue to learn one of life's most important lessons, that they continue to live our school values, and continue to learn and develop outstanding knowledge, skills and attitudes in Literacy, numeracy and all other subject areas, it was also very important that our students develop outstanding Technology Skills and 21st Century Skills so they would be successful now and in the future in our rapidly changing world.
For many years I have thought that a television station should produce a series about the MAGIC of the Auburn North Family of students, staff, and parents and what the family achieves every day.
Maybe, just maybe, one day OUR school will star on television as a model for what can be achieved in a school and its wider community when all students, staff, and parents from all around the world live, learn, teach, and parent together in perfect harmony. Now, that would be a television program I’d love to watch.

K - 2 Parents as Partners in Learning Workshop
On Tuesday 21st March, over one hundred parents and carers participated in a K-2 Parents as Partners in Learning workshop held in our school hall. The goal of the workshop was to provide families with important information about the new K-2 English and Mathematics Curriculum that is being implemented in all NSW schools from 2023.
Mrs Bazzi, Mrs Mehr, Ms Lynch, Mrs Rashtia, and Mrs Simon provided families with detailed information about the way in which Auburn North teachers and leaders have effectively prepared for the change in curriculum and how Literacy and Numeracy are now being taught in K-2 classrooms.
English Curriculum: Families learnt about the explicit nature of Auburn North phonics, reading and writing lessons, and saw videos of learning in action. They also saw and learnt about the high-quality reading resources that are utilised in classrooms and were shown how to access an online reading library which forms part of our home reader program.
Mathematics Curriculum: Families learnt about priority areas in mathematics that have remained the same from the previous curriculum, including an explicit focus on counting, subitising, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and place value. They also learnt about the increased focus on ‘working mathematically’ processes, where students are provided with opportunities to apply their maths learning to rich tasks that require critical thinking and character.
Mrs Rashtia provided wonderful translation to families in both Pashto and Dari to ensure all parents were able to understand the information provided.
Thank you very much to all parents who attended this workshop.
Grade-based Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 workshops will take place in Term 2, to continue this learning. For families that may have been unable to attend due to work commitments or illness, leaders will be recording a video of the information provided in this workshop and will make this available sometime during Week 10 this term.
Mrs Simon

On Friday 10th March, 26 students and four teachers made dreams come true by performing in the Pulse Alive 2023 performance. Pulse Alive is a large-scale event, providing high-quality opportunities in the performing arts for students and teachers from NSW public schools in greater Sydney and beyond.
The Auburn North students performed in a combined dance and danced to ‘The Animal Song’. They also had to learn the dance moves for the finale.
The students had been rehearsing at school in term 4 last year and term 1 this year to prepare for the big night. They attended a rehearsal in February, where they met and danced with the other 300 students who they would perform with on the night.
It wasn’t until they arrived at Ken Rosewell Arena on the performance day that they realised that 4000 students were involved in this event. Even though the day was long with multiple rehearsals, the students maintained their enthusiasm for the whole day and night.
It wasn’t until the students ran out on the arena to perform to a sold-out audience that the nerves set in but, in true Auburn North style, they danced like stars. There were students singing, an orchestra, 1000 students in a mass choir, stage lights, big screens, and confetti cannons. Everyone was incredibly proud of all the students.
Some of the teacher highlights were:
- ANPS students making friends and chatting with students from other schools while in the holding room.
- The high spirits, positive energy and exemplary manners of students all day and all night.
- Our students being so proud of what they had achieved.
- Our students cheering every performance.
A big thank you to Mrs Varley, Miss Bravo, Mrs Denning, Miss Wang and Mrs McBriarty for your time supporting the students.
Thank you also to Mrs Clift for looking after all of the amazing parents who came to enjoy the Pulse Alive performance.

2L have been enjoying a wonderful term of learning! We have been working together as a team to do our very best every day. 2L students love coming to school because learning is FUN!
In numeracy, we had a blast using balloons and making towers using unifix cubes. We had races to see who the most throws could using balloons and make the tallest tower in 60 seconds. The challenge was super fun and engaging.
We also made our own rulers to measure who had the biggest head in 2L. We worked collaboratively in pairs to help each other mark the circumference of our head. The fun continued as we made airplanes and use our handspans to measure the distance of the airplanes.

2023 is off to a brilliant start in 6H!
We have been studying natural disasters in our reading, writing and science lessons, which included the study of bushfires, volcanoes and earthquakes. As part of our learning, we even got to build a 3D volcano that we then used coca cola and mentos to recreate a lifelike volcanic eruption.
During our history lessons we have been learning all about Australia’s Federation and the way our Parliament works, which is excellent timing as students are able to see the election process in action this year.
Our math studies have begun with the new syllabus and 6H has already tackled a variety of challenges that have forced us to jump down into the learning pit. We particularly enjoyed the 4 Fours challenge where we had to create the numbers 1-20 using only 4 fours in an equation. It was definitely sweaty brain work!
We have also been exploring our passions during RFF, with Mrs Irrgang. This is where we are able to research and present on a topic of our own interest. It has been wonderful to see how our learning can be led by our curiosities and we have loved hearing about the passions of our classmates.
6H have also had a brush with fame, not once, but three times this year during the Behind The News segment “Ask A Reporter” where our questions were read out and answered either by a news reporter or by a panel expert – like a NASA scientist.
With the year off to such a fabulous start we can’t wait to see what the next three terms will hold for us.
