Dear Parents,
I would like to congratulate all students, staff, and parents on working together so effectively to ensure that this term has been so successful for all members of the Auburn North FAMILY. I believe this term has laid the foundation for what will prove to be our school’s most successful year in the past 24 years.
Early indicators of a highly successful 2024 school year include:
- Inspirational and innovative leadership and teaching taking place in every classroom and every learning space every school day since the beginning of this school year.
- Motivated and engaged students trying very hard every single day to achieve their learning goals and to live and breathe our school’s values of honesty, kindness, respect, fairness, friendship, and responsibility so that they make 2023 better than the best.
- Achieving some of our planned outcomes in the areas of student and staff wellbeing, leadership, teaching, student learning, and parent involvement and parent engagement.
OUR THREE-WAY CONFERENCES
Many schools have parent-teacher meetings twice a year. However, at Auburn North, we have always believed it is essential that students attend and participate in meetings when teachers and parents meet to discuss student development, student achievement, and areas for future development.
We believe it is very important for students to attend and participate in conferences for a number of reasons including:
- Students see and learn that their teachers and parents have developed trusting and mutually respectful relationships.
- Students see and learn that their teachers and parents are working together in partnership to assist students become the very best young people they can become.
- Students have a “voice” regarding their learning and are able to reflect on their learning and on areas they would like to continue improving.
- Students, teachers and parents develop a shared understanding of the students as young people and not just as learners.
- Each team of student, teacher and parent can work hand-in-hand to assist each student achieve each of their 2023 goals.
Last week it was wonderful to see these teams of students, parents and teachers talking with each other and working with each other in perfect harmony for the benefit of all of our parents, teachers and, most importantly, our STUDENTS.

Literacy
KM students have been learning to write all the letters of the alphabet. We have had fun writing the letters in our books with crayons and pencils, on mini whiteboards, and making letters with playdough. We even took our learning outside and wrote letters on the infants asphalt with chalk!
We have also been learning the sounds that some letters make. We can break words down into their sounds. Even though it is only term 1, KM students are already learning how to write sentences and read books using the sounds we can hear in words.
Visual Arts
In addition to learning about letters and sounds, we have also completed a number of visual art projects, using a variety of materials. We have used coloured paper, paint, cotton wool, crayons, crepe paper and wool to make representations of letters and animals. We have decorated our classroom with our very own visual art exhibition!
KM students have settled well into school at Auburn North, and love coming to school each day to learn together.

4/3L has had a brilliant but busy start to the year. Both Year 3 and Year 4 students have been working hard to make this year better than the best. Throughout the term, Year 3 have been preparing for NAPLAN and as a reward, we were able to enjoy an afternoon of fun with friends and teachers! 4/3L has also been growing together as a team and class family, being lucky enough to celebrate Harmony Day and appreciating each other’s cultures and backgrounds. We also designed hands that represent each of us and these will be displayed as a tree that represents our diverse, yet unique class.
Literacy
For Reading, Year 4 have been enjoying different high quality picture books and then discussing the visual and textual features that we noticed in the books. We have really loved seeing and reading the different styles and types of books. Year 3 have been polishing and improving their comprehension abilities by focusing on skimming and scanning, as well as our ability to answer literal and inferential questions.
This term during Writing, Year 4 have focused on writing book reports about the picture books that we have read. For each book report, we included a summary, character descriptions and an opinion and recommendation. We have particularly enjoyed publishing each of our book reports in new and creative ways. Year 3 have been practising and perfecting our narratives and expositions. We have thought creatively when constructing our stories, but also critically when building our arguments.
Numeracy
During Numeracy lessons, Year 3 and 4 have enjoyed a range of hands-on investigations and activities that showed us just how important maths is in our day to day lives! A few weeks ago, we measured large areas using a square metre that we built in small groups. Just last week, we used different measuring tools to find different distances. We were extra lucky that the sun was shining when we went out to measure the width of the oval using trundle wheels! Our class discussed which measuring tool was best depending on the distance. We know that small distances can be measured with a simple ruler, whereas larger areas will need a trundle wheel.
