Dear Parents,
The other members of the Auburn North staff and I hope you and your family are well.
Leaders and teachers from other NSW public schools and senior officers from the NSW Department of Education regularly contact our school asking if they can visit our school to learn about our very successful programs, strategies, and practices that assist our students love school, love learning, and achieve outstanding wellbeing and learning outcomes.
Mr Darren Stevens is the principal of Birrong Boys High School. Mr Stevens is presently the relieving Director of the Auburn network of schools. Auburn North is a member of this network of schools. Mr Stevens contacted me and asked if he could spend three hours in our school. He said wanted to learn why the Auburn North family was such a successful school learning community.
Mr Stevens visited our school last week. During this time, he spent a good deal of time visiting our classrooms to observe our teachers teach literacy lessons and our students actively participating in their lessons and achieving some of their learning goals.
Mr Stevens also spent nearly 90 minutes meeting with the members of our school’s executive team and our grade leaders to learn about our school’s programs, strategies, and practices and their impact on our students.
Later that day, Mr Stevens sent an email to me. Some excerpts from the email are below:
“I’d like to thank you and your team, from the bottom of my heart, for your time today.
It was amazing to see your team speak with such pride about their work in support of your young people. It was similarly amazing to see these efforts at work in the classroom.”
“I could spend a month in your school just asking questions and then I’m sure more questions would come to mind.”
Parents I am so proud to be a member of the very special Auburn North FAMILY. I hope you are.

1C have worked very hard so far this year and strive to achieve the learning goal of every lesson. They have begun Term 2 with positive attitudes and continue to show all of the ANPS school values to their teachers and peers.
Literacy
In writing this term, Year 1 students are writing persuasive letters inspired by high quality picture books. Last week, Year 1 read the book ‘I Wanna Iguana’ by Karen Kaufman Orloff & David Catrow. They then followed the writing process to write a letter to Mr Harris to try and convince him that we should have a classroom pet! Some suggestions included a fish, a rabbit, a turtle and a koala! Students showed the 21st century learning skills of creativity and critical thinking to plan and write convincing reasons. Students are beginning to use persuasive language in their writing and experiment with punctuation by including questions marks and exclamation marks.
Numeracy
This term in numeracy, 1C have been developing their number sense and addition skills. We are learning to use a range of addition strategies including numbers bond of 10 and doubles to help us add two numbers together quickly. We had lots of fun making our own hopscotch on the asphalt to help us practice our doubles! Students have challenged themselves and continue to persevere while learning new strategies.
Digital Technology
This semester, 1C have been learning a range of very important ICT skills! This includes logging in to the computer, navigating the network, opening and saving a word document and typing sentences. Later in the term, we will learn how to insert an image and shape!
Sport
This term, 1C have been busy training for the upcoming cross county and are looking forward to having a fun day with our family and friends.

LEARNING IN 3H
3H have had a positive, successful and FUN start to Term 2.
Reading:
During our reading lessons, we have enjoyed exploring some of the Super Six Strategies. We have been focusing on the strategies of questioning, summarising and monitoring.
Writing:
In writing we have been learning about the structure of information reports and writing our own informative texts about DINOSAURS! If you ask any student from 3H, they will be able to tell you an interesting fact that they’ve discovered about certain dinosaurs. I will state one for you now:
Did you know that the Stegosaurus was a herbivore and had no front teeth? It used to store food (plants and vegetation) in its cheeks and chew on them slowly, when it got hungry.
Numeracy:
During our numeracy lessons we have been strengthening our knowledge of number facts, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We have been using hands on concrete materials to support our learning and make our lessons fun.
We have enjoyed learning and growing together so far this year and look forward to continuing our learning journeys together.
