Dear Parents,
The other members of the Auburn North staff and I hope you and your family are well.
Our ‘Running, Reading and Picnic Day’ program last week was a huge success. Except for our community festival day programs which we have not been able to hold for four years because of COVID, I have never seen so many parents in our/their school at any one time as I did last week.
More than 300 parents took the opportunity to come to school to:
- Visit classrooms to participate in our ‘National Simultaneous Storytime’ activities with their children.
- Watch their children have fun participating in the cross-country.
- Enjoy a picnic lunch with their children and other families.
It was the Auburn North Family at its very best and happiest.
I would like to thank all members of the Auburn North staff for contributing to the success of the day. I would especially like to thank Ms Wilkins, Ms Chan, and Ms Edwards for coordinating this special event, an event I hope will become an annual event.
Please find below a report that was written by Ms Edwards, Ms Chan, and Wilkins, as well as some photos from the day.
CLASS REPORTS – KZ and 5W
For your reading pleasure please find attached to this newsletter reports that have been written by KZ and 5W.
I would like to thank the students in KZ and their teacher, Ms Zeidan, and the students in 5W and their teacher, Ms Wilkins.
Regards
Mark Harris
We had an amazing day on the 25th of May at Auburn North Public School with not just one or two, but three fun events all happening together!

LEARNING IN 5W
We've had a successful start to Term 2 in 5W, with our students maintaining their positive attitude and focus towards learning. They have embraced new challenges and demonstrated the school values on a daily basis.
Literacy:
In our literacy lessons, we are reading the novel "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio. As part of our study, students are learning about different language features used in the book. They are getting better at spotting these features and talking about how they add to the story.
We are also discussing the characters in the book. This gives us a chance to understand why characters behave the way they do. It's been great to see the students thinking about the book's characters and their actions.
Students are writing their own chapter reviews too. In these, they are learning to share their own thoughts about the book and back up their opinions with details from the story.
Numeracy:
In our numeracy lessons, we're learning about multiplication and division, which the new syllabus calls 'multiplicative relations'. As part of this, students are learning to identify prime and composite numbers, which are special types of numbers.
We're also learning about the area model, which is a way of visualising multiplication and division. This helps the students see how these number operations work and make sense of them in a clear way.
The students have been working hard in their maths lessons and we are proud of their efforts. They are not afraid to try new things and are getting better at solving difficult problems.
We are excited for the rest of Term 2. The students of 5W are ready to keep learning, trying new things, and pushing beyond their comfort zones. We can't wait to see what they will achieve! Keep up the great work, 5W!

Starting Kindergarten has been a big and FUN adventure! KZ students have been making outstanding progress and creating such special memories in their first year of school. Students have been learning sounds, reading words in a decodable book, writing sentences, counting and so much more! We have also been making friends, learning school routines and trying our best to learn how we can show our six school values every day.
Literacy
During Semester 1, we have been learning level 1 and level 2 sounds. We have used our knowledge of these sounds to read decodable texts and write decodable sentences. Each week our reading and writing further develops as we can read more words and write more words in our sentences. We have enjoyed learning about our Australian book characters at school and at home with our families using the online library.

Numeracy
During Semester 1, KZ mathematicians have been learning to count, read and write, represent and make numbers to 10. Using these numbers, we have started to learn how to add two groups together and take objects away from a collection. We have used various concrete materials to assist us in our learning, such as counters, penguins on ice and ten frames. Students are very excited to further develop their numeracy skills by learning about numbers up to 20.

Science
This term in science we have been learning about changes in weather. One way we have been exploring the different changes is by investigating materials in clothing that will keep us dry or warm in rainy or cold weather. We dressed up in raincoats, rain boots, beanies and scarves. We sprayed water and investigated whether we stay dry and warm.

KZ are super excited to continue learning and making more fun memories to make sure we have the best year!
