Dear Parents,
The other members of the Auburn North staff hope you and your families are well.
WHAT CAN OUR STUDENTS LEARN FROM THE MATILDAS?
Like most Australians, the members of the Auburn North Public School Learning Community followed the progress of the Australian Matildas women’s soccer team during this year’s soccer world cup. Like all Australians, we were so proud of their individual and team efforts and achievements.
During the four weeks when matches were played, we regularly spoke with students about the Matildas during morning assemblies. We did this because we believed our students could learn a great deal from our new female soccer heroes.
The other members of Auburn North staff and I believed the Matildas demonstrated important life lessons for our students and exhibited our school’s six values on and off the field.
We hoped the Matildas helped our students understand that:
- We should set goals or targets and work as hard as possible to achieve them.
- We should always try our very best.
- We should always take pride in everything we do and when we wear a uniform.
During their exciting progress to the semi-finals, the Matildas modelled our six school values for our students. At all times they displayed fairness, honesty, respect, friendship, kindness, and responsibility.
We will continue to encourage our students to demonstrate, live, and breathe the values our wonderful Matildas showed for all the world to see over the past month.

‘EMBRACE MOMENTS’ – Cumberland City Council
You may have noticed some colourful new structures on Melton Street next to our school. They are part of Cumberland City Council’s 'Embrace Monuments' project.
Embrace Monuments consists of several clusters of highly coloured turned wooden posts, of varying heights and sizes, engaging the community from young children to adults. It provides a sense of discovery and colour in the street and creates a neighbourhood space that is positive and optimistic. The post, totem or column is a universal architectural form used in Western, Eastern, and Indigenous cultures.
Through explorations in colour, ornament, pattern and form, Embrace Monuments serves to reflect the diverse cultural connections that people have to the local and broader Cumberland area.
Auburn North was the only school to be included in the Embrace Monuments project. Last year some of our Kindy students completed artwork that was used to design the structures.

Parents As Partners in Learning Year 1
On Wednesday 16th August, over 35 parents and carers participated in a Year 1 Parents as Partners in Learning workshop held in our school hall. The workshop focused on mathematics.
Mrs Mehr, Miss Lynch and Mr Salempour provided families with detailed information about the way in which Auburn North teachers teach mathematics in the classroom, and shared strategies that families can use at home to best support their child develop their mathematics skills.
Families learnt about the Year 1 Maths Targets, including counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and place value. They watched videos of learning in action and all families took home a resources bag that included games families can play at home.
Families also learnt about the increased focus on ‘working mathematically’ processes, where students are provided with opportunities to apply their maths learning to rich tasks that require critical thinking and character.
Mr Salempour provided wonderful translation to families in Dari to ensure all parents were able to understand the information provided.
Thank you very much to all parents who attended this workshop. It was amazing to see families sitting with their children and playing the math games. There were so many smiles and giggles. Below is some feedback we received from parents during the workshop:
“We wish we had this when we were at school!”
“It’s so nice to know what my child is learning in the classroom, so I can teach them in that same way at home”.
For families that may have been unable to attend due to work commitments or illness, Mrs Mehr and Miss Lynch recorded a video of the information provided in this workshop and have made this available to all families via seesaw.

Parents As Partners in Learning Year 2
On Tuesday 8th September, over thirty mums and dads participated in the third Year 2 ‘Parents as Partners in Learning’ workshop for 2023. This was the third reading workshop of the year, and the goal of the session was to provide families with information about reading comprehension and reading fluency.
Mrs McBriarty, Miss Wang, and Mrs Simon provided families with detailed information about the way in which teachers at Auburn North teach reading in the classroom and they provided a range of practical strategies that families can use at home with their children.
Parents learnt about the differences between literal, inferential, and evaluative comprehension questions. Students joined their parents and they worked together to answer comprehension questions based on images and multimodal texts.
It was clear that all families were very impressed with the way in which the Year 2 students were able to answer questions in full sentences.
Families also learnt how important reading fluency is and took home a one-minute sand-timer to use when practising fluent reading at home. The target is for students to eventually read at least 90 words per minute.
Finally, families were introduced to what NAPLAN reading asessments look like and were able to view an example of the online assessment with their children. Families did a wonderful job of answering some of the comprehension questions together.
Mr Salempour provided very effective translation to families in Dari to ensure families were able to understand the information provided.
We would like to thank all the parents who attended this workshop, and we look forward to hosting more ‘Parents as Partners in Learning’ workshops in the future.
Mrs Simon, Ms Wang, Mrs McBriarty

What’s been happening in 3P? It has been a busy term but at Auburn North we never rest and 3P are working hard to make 2023 better than the best! Here is a snippet of all the wonderful things that have been happening in 3P.

In maths, 3P have been learning how to describe and compare two-dimensional shapes, including parallelograms, rectangles, rhombuses, squares, trapeziums and kite. We used technology to transform shapes by translating, reflecting and rotating to investigate which shapes tessellate. We developed an appreciation that any triangle will tessellate.
Community Festival Day
We have been busy rehearsing for Community Festival Day next term! We are excited to share that we will be representing the Nepalese Community by performing a traditional dance. We can’t wait to share this special day with our Auburn North family. Here is a sneak peak of what you can expect on the big day in term 4!
Book Week Celebrations
Book Week is one of the biggest event our school calendar. 3P had so much fun celebrating reading and Australian literature. The Book Week theme for 2023 is "Read, Grow, Inspire". 3P spent the day participating in a variety of fun activities including the character parade, scavenger hunting and reading new short-listed stories presented by The Children's Book Council of Aus tralia for 2023.
