Dear Parents,
The other members of the Auburn North staff and I hope you and your families are well.
As you know, you can now access the videos of the magnificent student performances during our recent Community Festival Day program.
To coincide with the release of the videos, please find below an extract from the address I presented during the morning 3-6 concert.
“Parents and Special Guests,
Thank you for joining us today. I’ve been looking forward to today’s Community Festival Day (CFD) program for the past four years, I wanted to see if our students, staff, and parents shared my excitement so I asked some of them.
Three students said the following:
‘I’m excited about Community Festival Day because we will be able to share our traditions, what we do, how we dress, and how we dance. I will also enjoy learning interesting facts about other cultures and seeing different cultures represented through dance.’
‘I’m looking forward to seeing the costumes and their vibrant colours, and how they will SWISH together as they dance.’
‘I’m excited about Community Festival Day because it’s exciting for parents to see the performances and they will appreciate our different backgrounds, the songs, and the costumes.’

Mrs Wilkins said:
‘I can't wait to see our entire Auburn North family come together in a celebration of culture and community. I'm most looking forward to spending time with families and parents and seeing everyone enjoy the picnic together.’
Ms Chan explained:
‘I’m looking forward to sharing this special day with the Auburn North community where students, families, and staff come together to watch the amazing performances that each class has worked hard to prepare. It’s going to be such a fantastic day!’
Comments made by three of our parents were:
‘The CFD is like a festival in Australia, which is my new home. I’m so excited to see how so many cultures can come together and make one cohesive community where everyone is kind and respectful of each other.’
‘I am so excited because Australia is a multicultural country, and it makes me really happy I will see and meet new people I have never met before.’
‘I’m looking forward to seeing all the children perform in cultural costumes and enjoying a day full of fun and happiness.’
I’m excited for the same reasons, but I’m also excited for other reasons. They are all to do with the unique nature of our public school.
Many of the people in the hall this morning are first-time visitors to Auburn North. In a short period of time, I hope they develop an understanding of and appreciation for some of our school community’s very special features.
Auburn North Public School is one of Australia’s most multicultural schools. In addition to our families from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background, our families and students come from more than 60 different countries and speak more than 40 different languages.
Our school is a microcosm of the big, wide world. Our school reflects so much of what is great about OUR WORLD and we believe we are the United Nations.
Just like Auburn Girls, Granville Boys, Birrong Boys, and the other public schools in the Auburn Network, we believe our school is multiculturalism at its very best and most successful.
We believe our school community, like the other public schools represented here today, is a model for what schools and communities of people can achieve when they live together in perfect harmony in the best interests of their students, staff, parents, and the wider community.
We hope our first-time visitors get a sense of that today.
First-time visitors, I hope you develop a sense that Auburn North really is a community school, a school for its students, staff, and parents.
At Auburn North we take great pride in everything we do. We believe if you are going to do something, then you should do it to the very best of your ability. I hope our first-time visitors will see that feature of our school culture.
Many staff members have told me that along with their own homes, Auburn North is their ‘Happy Place’. During our concert and picnic lunch, I expect our visitors will hear that feature of our school.
School data, NAPLAN data and ‘Tell Them From Me’ survey data over many, many years clearly show our students develop outstanding literacy and numeracy skills, technology skills, and 21st Century skills.
Our leaders, teachers, and parents have worked in partnership to assist our students love school, love learning, and become successful learners.
The evidence also shows our students live and breathe our school’s six values, which are honesty, kindness, respect, fairness, friendship, and responsibility.
We could be satisfied with these achievements, but our school family is far more aspirational . We have aimed to achieve even greater goals.
For more than 20 years, we have wanted to assist our young people learn life’s most important lesson. We have believed and continue to believe this lesson would assist them be truly happy and successful today and for the rest of their lives and would enable them to go out into THEIR world to make it a better place for everyone.
For 24 years our school’s theme has been:
Auburn North Public School is the school that provides the ‘Best of All Worlds’ for 21st Century Learners.’ This theme means that our students come from all around the world to learn the lesson that regardless of a person’s cultural background, colour, or religion, we are all essentially the same. We all want to live safe, happy, peaceful, and successful lives.
I believe children can only learn this lesson by attending a multicultural public school like Auburn North.
Our staff and parents believe over the past 24 years a whole generation of thousands of Auburn North students has gone out into their world to share this lesson with others and assisted their world become a more compassionate, kind, and respectful world.
First-time visitors, as you watch our students celebrate their own and each other’s cultures today, I hope you agree with me that we can feel confident about the future of our world because the future is in the hands of our beautiful students and their generation.”

WOW! What an amazing start to Term 4 and a fantastic year in 3CD so far. All students have made significant growth in all areas of literacy and numeracy, as well as developing their 21st century learning skills. We also got to perform our African dance for Community Festival Day. We were so excited and proud to showcase our dance at the 3-6 concert in front of all our families and special guests after many hours of dance rehearsals.

Literacy
In literacy, 3CD students have been developing their skills to write well-structured and persuasive discussions supported by evidence. We have been learning to plan effective reasons to support both sides of an argument.
When writing a paragraph for each reason for and against, we have used the ‘PEEL’ acronym and strategy as a guide to assist us write our reason paragraphs successfully.
All students have been able to think of very creative and strong reasons to support the weekly discussion topic.
Numeracy
During numeracy lessons, students have been learning to measure the length of a shape using cubes. Despite this being a challenging topic, 3CD students have demonstrated great dedication and determination to successfully construct rectangular prisms and describe the volume of each prism.
We have also been working on recognising the ‘equal’ sign in maths and working on number sentences to ensure that both sides of the equal sign are of the same value.
3CD students have been working hard this year and are eager to continue to try their very best for the remainder of the year. We are so proud of all the boys and girls in 3CD!

KS students have created friendships in the classroom and on the playground. We always smile at each other and use positive words to help build good friendships which will last a lifetime!
Literacy
In literacy, KS students have been independently writing interesting sentences that include describing words, pronouns, and a conjunction. This week students have been learning to write sentences that include a question mark about different characters and animals.
The students of KS have shown great determination to create excellent sentences that reflect the writing goals for Kindergarten.
Numeracy
In numeracy, students have been learning to take away objects from a collection. The students in KS can successfully use concrete materials, such as counters to achieve their numeracy learning goals.
When we are learning about subtraction we use ten frames to take away objects and count how many objects are left.
Students can successfully write the numbers to show how many objects are left in their collection.

Science
KS students have been engaged in very exciting science lessons this term. They have been learning about the properties and strengths of different materials such as plastic, fabric, wood and metal.
KS studentshave shown great curiosity when investigating how different types of materials will float or sink in water. There is a lot of engaging and insightful discussions in the classroom about how different materials will suit the different designs we are creating when making our boats.
KS have had a wonderful term of learning and we look forward to taking our learning to new heights duringthe remainder of term 4.
