Dear Parents,
Miss Mirzai and I were invited to present information on behalf of all members of the Auburn North Public School Learning Community at a state-wide conference in Sydney last week. The Theme of the conference was 'Leading for Inclusivity, Engagement and Achievement' and it was attended by high school and primary school Principals and Deputy Principals from all around NSW.
One NSW high school was invited to present information and Auburn North was the only primary school invited to present information to the Principals and Deputy Principals.
The theme of Miss Mirzai’s and my presentation was:
‘Auburn North, A World Family Living and Learning Together in Perfect Harmony – Achieving Outstanding Wellbeing and Learning Outcomes and Growth for Students, Leaders, Teachers and Parents by Maximising Their Inclusivity and Engagement’.
Firstly, Miss Mirzai and I explained that our school had strategically and effectively led the implementation of a whole-school, integrated approach using our leaders and teachers and our programs and practices to achieve outstanding well-being and learning outcomes and growth for all our community members by maximising their inclusivity and engagement in THEIR school.
We then explained that our students, staff and parents live and breathe our school’s Moral Purpose, Theme and Values, which lay the foundation of our school’s culture. We informed the leaders that our:
- Moral Purpose is ‘ …acting with an intention of making a positive difference in the lives of individuals, groups of people, and communities of people.’
- Theme is that Auburn North provides ‘The Best of All Worlds for 21st Century Learners’ which means that we come to Auburn North from all around the world to learn one of life’s most important lessons. That lesson is that regardless of a person’s cultural background, religion or colour, we are all essentially the same. We all want to live happy, peaceful and successful lives.
- Values of Respect, Friendship, Fairness, Kindness, Honesty, and Responsibility.
Miss Mirzai and I then explained that to maximise the inclusion and engagement of all Auburn North community members to maximise their wellbeing and learning outcomes and growth our school has collaboratively developed and implemented a number of successful strategies including:
- Strategic Thinking, Planning and Actions
- Evaluative Practices and External School Reviews
- Leadership
- Procedures to Select Temporary Teachers
- Teacher Professional Learning
- Student Wellbeing and Learning Programs
- Parent Engagement Programs
Ms Cortejos, who accompanied Miss Mirzai and myself to the conference said she felt very proud to be a member of the Auburn North FAMILY during our presentation.
Following our presentation a number of Principals and Deputy Principals congratulated us on our learning community’s achievements and some asked if they could visit Auburn North to learn more about our very successful programs.
‘PARENTS as PARTNERS In LEARNING PROGRAM’
Our 2019 ‘Parents as Partners In Learning Program’ will involve workshops for parents of students in all K-6 grades. The 2019 program started very successfully last week for parents with students in Year 1.
More than 60 parents participated in the first workshop, which involved a lot of hands-on activities, fun and laughter. I don’t think our parents realised how much fun learning could be.
I know all parents learned a great deal during the workshop and appreciated the work of Mrs Turk and all Year 1 teachers, our specialist support teachers, and Miss Mirzai.
Please find below an extract from an email that was sent to our school by one of the appreciative parents.
“Dear Mr Harris,
Firstly, I would like to thank the great organisation by the wonderful teachers here at ANPS. The ‘Parents as Partners In Learning Program’ was very professionally organised and I learnt a lot as a result of attending the workshop. Many thanks to Mrs Turk, Miss Mirzai and the other teachers for the effort they they have put into the program.
As a parent I would like to see my child achieve to the highest level as possible and with this kind of organisation I believe we are going to achieve. I’m looking forward to the next workshop.”
CYBER SAFETY FOR STUDENTS
I would like to remind you about the importance of ensuring your child is a safe and responsible internet user, whether they are using social networking websites and apps, or accessing online games and multimedia.
There are many potential risks to consider when your child has access to the internet, including talking to strangers, disclosing private information about themselves, and accessing information that is unsafe, frightening or offensive. It is so important that you are aware of what your child can access online and who they are able to interact with. Please speak with your child about internet safety and monitor their social media and internet use.
The Office of the eSafety Commissioner has provided five top tips to help limit your child’s exposure to harmful content online:
- Engage in your child’s online activities – ask what apps, sites and games they’re using and make sure they’re age-appropriate
- Use parental controls on devices to help limit what your child is exposed to
- Let them know not everything they see online is real or true
- Help them report and block upsetting content they see on social media sites or apps
- Let them know they can come to you about anything upsetting they see online, and contact Kids Helpline if they need further support.
CANTEEN LUNCH ORDERS
We are fortunate at Auburn North to have a wonderful canteen open every day for students to buy breakfast or oder their lunch. Students can order their lunch by lining up at the canteen by 8:50am to make their order with our canteen staff.
It is important that all students move to their class lines in the COLA when the 8:55am bell goes. This means students must arrive at school between 8:30am-8:45am if they would like to order their lunch. Students who are ordering their lunch are not to go to the COLA or asphalt to play until they have made their order at the canteen.
Students who are still in the canteen line at 8:55am will be asked to walk to their class lines and will not be able to order their lunch. Parents are able to make orders for their children after the 8:55am bell. Please ensure your child arrives at school between 8:30am-8:45am so they can order their lunch before 8:50am.

Meet the 2019 Student Leaders
We asked the 2019 Student Leaders to select or write a quote about Leadership which was important to them, and reflect on what the quote means for them as a leader this year. This is what they said:
School Captain
Beyza – 6M
“Great teams are great together”. - Beyza
This quote explains the importance of working together to achieve great things. It must be a team effort to truly say it was a success. Collaborating with others is an important lifelong skill. I am grateful to be part of such a wonderful team and we will work hard to achieve great things in 2019.
School Captain
Mahmoud – 6M
“Respect is earned, honesty is appreciated, trust is gained, loyalty is returned”. - Mahmoud
Respect can be earned through the way you treat others. Honesty is appreciated when you stick to your word. Trust is gained when students feel safe around you and teachers can rely on you. Loyalty is returned when students listen and we achieve our vision together. I will follow these principles every day to try to become a great leader who motivates and helps others.

School Vice Captain
Nawal – 6V
“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality”. -Warren Bennis
In 2019 I want to help make Auburn North an even better place and even more exciting.

School Vice Captain
Saurav – 6H/I
“Lead from the back and let others believe they are in front”. -Nelson Mandela
This quote is special because it describes how leaders can inspire others to feel confident, successful and positive. I aim to make others feel this way in 2019.
4E Maths News
In 4E we have been working extremely hard to achieve our Year 4 Numeracy Targets.
One of our numeracy targets is to read, write and order numbers of up to five-digits. We now know how to order our numbers using ascending and descending order.
Every day in 4E we practise our times tables. In term 1, we have focused on having instant recall of the four and six times tables. Next term we will focus on the seven and eight times tables. Students from 4E love to play whole class multiplication games, work with a partner using flash cards and challenge ourselves each day to beat our own personal time.
Another numeracy target we learnt was demonstrating equivalent fractions. We learnt this means different fractions that have the same value. We represented equivalent fractions using numerals, diagrams, placing them on a number line and creating a fraction wall to help us see which fractions are equal.
We have shown character and determination to achieve the learning goal in every maths lesson!
