Dear Parents,
The other members of the Auburn North staff and I hope you enjoyed a very happy two weeks with your children. To those families who celebrated Eid, we hope it proved to be a very special time of celebrations for you, your extended families, and your friends.
Our new term has begun exceptionally well. Effective teaching and learning resumed as soon as students returned to school last week and as I visited classrooms last week and this week I have seen and heard:
- Happy sounds and happy teachers and students.
- Trusting, friendly, and respectful relationships and respectful communication.
- Attractive and stimulating learning environments.
- High-quality, explicit, and engaging teaching.
- Teachers using their delightful personalities, abilities, and skills to motivate and inspire students.
- Engaged students who love learning and who are always wanting to do their very best.
- Successful, proud learners.
This term is going to be so exciting and so successful for all members of the Auburn North FAMILY.
WHAT TYPES OF ADULTS DO WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO BECOME?
Of course, you and our school’s staff want our students to develop outstanding literacy and numeracy knowledge and skills, outstanding technology skills, and outstanding 21st century skills such as critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. However, the other members of the Auburn North staff and I don’t believe this knowledge and these skills alone will assist our students grow up to become successful, well-rounded, happy adults.
We believe our students also need to be well-behaved, most well-mannered, and polite young people who live and breathe our school values of respect, kindness, honesty, friendship, fairness, and responsibility if they are going to become successful adults. WE hope you agree with our view.
In my 45 years of being a teacher and principal in dozens of schools, I can honestly say our Auburn North students over the past 25 years, including this year, have been the best-behaved, most well-mannered, polite, respectful, kind, honest, friendly, fair, and responsible students I have ever had the great pleasure of knowing.
You must be so proud of your children who are going to grow up to be outstanding Australian citizens who will contribute to the development of an even better Australia for all its citizens.
I hope you are also very proud of yourselves. We know that the quality of a child and an adult are the direct result of the way they have been raised by their parents.
CONGRATULATIONS Auburn North PARENTS.
Our 2024 Mother’s Day stall was a huge success. All the gifts were sold and all students who brought money to school were able to purchase a gift.

CLASS REPORTS
For your reading pleasure, please find below class reports from 6V and 3P. I would like to thank and congratulate 6V students and 3P students and their teachers Mrs Varley and Ms Pham.
Mark Harris
Principal
6V have returned from their fun, well-earned break after working towards their Term 1 goals, and are enthusiastic about the new learning ahead in Term 2.
This term, Year 6 will engage in the novel study of the text ‘Matilda’ and respond by writing a book review that includes summarising the text, character analysis, identifying language features and making connections. They will also compare the novel and move version of this text.
Our math studies, so far this term, have involved recognising equivalent percentages, decimals and fractions. We have enjoyed developing the life skill of calculating common percentages of quantities, making connections to real-life contexts. This week we will learn to add and subtract decimals up to 3 places and then challenge ourselves to solve word problems that include decimal numbers.
Students in 6V have examined how Australian society has changed throughout the twentieth century during history lessons. Our focus this term is understanding immigration and explaining the reasons why people migrated to Australia in this time period. We will watch and respond to case studies and research how immigrants contribute to Australian society. Our science focus has involved students investigating different types of forces to identify how they are used in everyday life. We have created parachutes to experiment with gravity and air resistance. We have also explored other forces such as buoyancy, elastic force and magnetism.
Insightful discussions have started in 6V about a healthy lifestyle and how advertising affects our food choices. Personal Development and Health lessons will involve students examining the food groups, the importance of exercise and sleep and the role of advertising.
Students in 6V are very excited about the sport program that is focused on tactics and movement. They are also excited about being in a P.S.S.A team.
6V has started Term 2 with such positive energy and are getting ready to soar, by doing their best and a little bit more.
What’s been happening in 3P with Miss Pham?
Literacy Groups – Sensational Strawberries
Miss Pham teaches the Sensational Strawberries for Year 3 Literacy Group. In writing this term, the Year 3 Sensational Strawberries have been planning, creating, and revising written texts for informative purposes, using text features, sentence-level grammar, punctuation, and word-level language for a target audience.
The Sensational Strawberries spent our first week in Literacy Groups using the teacher marking rubric to analyze and mark previous student work. This learning opportunity allowed the Sensational Strawberries to explore specific components and expectations to create high-quality written informative texts on the topic of dinosaurs.

Mathematics
In maths, 3P have been learning about additive relations. In our maths lessons, we have been learning how to select and use mental and written strategies for addition and subtraction involving two - and three-digit numbers.
Here is an example of one strategy that we have been practising in the classroom to model addition with and without regrouping and how to record the method.

Key Learning Areas – PDHPE
In PDHPE, 3P have been learning how to describe and practise ways respect, empathy and valuing diversity can positively influence respectful relationships. Examples included:
- identifying roles, rights and responsibilities in different relationships
- describing behaviours that show empathy and respect for the rights of others
- predicting and reflecting on how other students might feel in a range of challenging situations and discuss what they can do to support them.
